Steel and rave culture: the Chateau d’Eau in Paris

The Chateau d’Eau hotel will soon open in Paris, inspired by the legendary nightclubs of the 1980s. Each new project of the Touriste group, led by Adrien Gloagen and Julie Revoud, is different from the previous one – eight different teams worked on eight locations. Alexis Lamesta and Charlotte Albert from Necchi Architecture were invited to collaborate on this one.

The chosen strategy has never failed the tandem: being open to ambitious projects, they endow each of the hotels with their own character. “We love that it’s an adventure every time,” says Julie.

The group’s eighth experimental facility, Chateau d’Eau, will open in the 10th arrondissement. The hotel’s interiors pay homage to the culture of the 1980s and the eclectic home of French actor and performer Serge Gainsbourg himself. The spaces were filled with tactile fabrics in contrast to cold aluminum and rare finds from flea markets.

Each of Touriste’s projects is designed for the “dream client” – an iconic personality whose character perfectly matches the place. In the case of Chateau d’Eau, that character was Yves Saint Laurent’s muse and former Chanel model Betty Catroux, where she could return at 2 a.m. from the La Palace nightclub.

“We have a number of hotels that are completely different from each other, and they all describe them as if they were inspired by Wes Anderson,” adds Gloagen. “Wes Anderson didn’t inspire us at all. Our hotels are not a movie. Every hotel is a person, Betty Catroux or Catherine Deneuve. Perhaps that’s what creates the identity of Touriste – the stories of the people behind them.”
