Australian architect Chelsea Hing and Mat Elkan Design have renovated a period terrace house in Melbourne’s Albert Park into a light-filled family home. The interior turned out to be modern, calm, and functional. The clients have an extensive art collection, so the interior becomes a blank canvas, reflecting the character and lifestyle of the owners. The house was called Art House.
Maintaining a connection to the residence’s history was key, so the designer and architect paid homage by planning the space within the existing form. The historical elements, painted white, contrast with the modern pieces of furniture, but the art seamlessly unites them. To create a feeling of freedom as you move around the home, Chelsea Hing and Mat Elkan Design created an open floor plan. This was one of the main challenges – to strike a balance between open spaces and private areas to provide opportunities for meetings and communication.
The project combines original design elements with bold modern colors and textures. The kitchen space is assembled from a mesmerizing palette of black granite, blue marble, sea-green tiles, and aged brass. Thanks to natural light and a calm color palette, the interior rhymes with the exterior. Doors with steel frames, ornate details, arched openings, and plaster emphasize the special charm of the house.
The bedroom and bathroom are done in soft pinks and greens and create a light and fresh watercolor mood thanks to the washed-out textures in the wall paint, fabrics, and paintings.
