Today, walls are painted even in the bathroom: there are many colors and moisture-resistant materials on sale. Let’s talk about why it’s so important to paint to find the right shade for perfectly painted walls.
What do you mean by color samples?
They are made on paper, cardboard, drywall, wood – on any surface. Sometimes colors are ordered from a manufacturing company that provides small sheets. But in most cases, you have to do them yourself, or with the help of designers – it depends on who you work with.
Why do you need paint at all?
This question is asked by beginners – those who do repairs themselves. After all, there are examples from the paint manufacturer, so-called fans, where the color is displayed in the form of squares indicating the series and number. It would seem that you select the color number on the “fan”, give the jar for tinting, take it away, paint it – you get the result.
But in reality, everything is not so simple.
The color of the walls will differ from that shown in the catalog. The final shade depends on the natural light in the apartment, the temperature of artificial lamps, the finish of the floor, the ceiling, and the original surface.
And the shade will be much richer on the wall than on the cardboard sample. Some even claim that there is a universal recipe – take the paint a shade lighter to get the desired result. But, as we mentioned above, everything is not so simple.
How to paint correctly?
Experts recommend painting on paper attached to a sheet of drywall. The surface needs to be primed and then painted. Don’t limit yourself to just one coat—apply paint until you get a look you like. At the same time, it will immediately be clear how many layers will be needed, and you can roughly calculate the amount of paint.
Then install the gypsum board sheets in the room where you will paint. And look at them in different lighting, and even preferably weather.
A few more things to know
Why shouldn’t you paint on the wall? If it is already plastered and prepared for painting, it is theoretically possible. But if you do several layers, the new paint may not completely cover the old one.
If you have wallpaper that can be painted, it’s especially not worth it. Too many layers will cause the material to peel off the walls.
The only exception is when you need to paint a relief surface – for example, brick. Then, before applying paint to a section of the wall, it must be thoroughly cleaned, all dust removed, and coated with a primer.
How much will painting increase the cost of repairs?
To say that it is cheap would be wrong. How expensive the process becomes depends on the type of paint. By the way, expensive materials often have small “trial” jars of 50-100 ml. But budget brands don’t offer such things.
If you have to tint the paint, you won’t be able to take cans smaller than 1 liter either – in general, doing samples is really a low-budget solution. But it will give the necessary result.
So, painting is a necessary measure if you want to achieve the desired color. It is better to do them on a sheet of drywall that has been previously primed. And don’t rely on manufacturers’ catalogs unless you want to make mistakes.
