Storage systems in the living room: 32 examples from designers

We tell you what storage systems are, how they differ, and how they are profitably located in the living room space.

Basically, storage systems can be divided into two large groups: open and closed. At the same time, these categories include both massive cabinets throughout the whole wall and miniature cabinets, which, despite their size, perfectly cope with the main function – to store things. To correctly calculate which design you need, think, first of all, what you are going to store in the living room, how many such items you have, and how often you need them in everyday life.

Hidden cabinet systems

Out of sight, out of mind. Especially popular is the option with a hidden storage system in small apartments when you need to hide everything behind the doors of the cabinets: from important documents and books to sets of guest bed linen.

So that the impressive system does not look heavy, it is often integrated into the wall. Please note that visually “hiding” the cabinets allows another technique: inconspicuous door handles or their complete absence.

Moreover, hidden storage systems, no matter how much space they occupy, on the contrary, can expand the space: with the help of mirror doors. And the doors-screens will also become an additional focal point of the interior, as in the project of Anna Pavlovskaya. By the way, here, with the help of such a rack, the volume of the living room will also expand: the height does not reach the ceiling, so the room seems higher, and the curtains are hidden behind the side of the cabinet, working to the depth of the room.

Cabinets with open shelves

Due to the fact that the items on the open shelves are always in plain sight, they expose the pride of the owners. Most often it is a rich collection of the home library or spectacular decor items. Therefore, it is here that the sofa area of the living room is traditionally concentrated.

However, when it comes to beauty, the question of practicality goes to the background: an “unexpected” spoiler – the shelves will gather dust and need constant order. But at the same time, this has its advantages: there is a reason to pay more attention to your favorite books and designer things.

Or the shelves can simply be hidden behind glass doors. Compliance with the order does not cancel this, but it will be less likely to fight dust.

Open racks

A more “airy” option compared to the previous point, which is in no way inferior to deep cabinets. In this case, the design can be both mobile and usually stands on four legs and is more stationary: then the rack is mounted on the floor.

Chests of drawers and cabinets

Do not forget about small pieces of furniture. To the question of how often you will turn to things hidden in drawers: it is much easier and faster to get them out of the chest of drawers or from the cabinet than, for example, from the top far shelf of the cabinet. And this option is good because it can be added to the interior already having settled the apartment if you suddenly realize that initially there were still not enough storage places.

Everything at once

Cabinets in the throughout the whole wall managed to accommodate both open shelves and closed drawers, and, of course, a “window” for the main thing – a TV.

In addition, in modern apartments, the living room is often combined with the kitchen. Then the storage system also serves to unite zones: this works due to a smooth transition from one part of the space to another. At the same time, the storage system itself is usually made of a single material, but the filling is especially different: for example, in the kitchen, the facades of cabinets become hidden, unlike the living area, or, conversely, an open bar with glasses in plain sight can contrast with a hidden and minimalistic living part.

After we have analyzed in detail what thoughtful storage systems can be, let’s remember another important nuance: where to place them so as not to lose either valuable square meters or visual space.

Storage areas in niches

Niches integrated into the wall are almost invisible, they do not form unnecessary corners and do not “break” the space.

However, this storage option needs to be worked out at the stage of designing the space (in addition, like any other option in a well-thought-out interior).

Storage locations next to the doorway

Another convenient and effective technique is storage around the doorway. This option is suitable not only for additional organization of storage places but also for recreating the classical situation: a symmetrical composition will streamline not only things but also the interior itself.
