There are as many types of people as there are interior styles. How to choose the one that will fit one hundred percent? First, consider the options. In the first part of our guide, we have collected the TOP 5 contemporary styles in interior design. Let’s continue our journey.

Mediterranean: vacation all year round

Mediterranean (aka marine) is a common name for several interior styles at once, conveying the national flavor of Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, and Morocco.

All varieties are united by a love of natural materials and rough textures. Favorites include decorative plaster, natural stone, ceramic mosaics, rattan, and wood. In a nautical interior, wood can even appear on the ceiling, taking the form of beams.

The style is based on an abundance of natural light, natural motives, and national ornaments. The Greek interior is dominated by blue and white tones, reminiscent of the sandy beaches of the southern coast. Other Mediterranean styles in the interior of the apartment are presented in warmer colors with bright spicy accents.

Main pros: This relaxed interior is designed for relaxation, its task is to create the illusion that the Mediterranean Sea is splashing outside your window, even if there is a dusty freeway.

Art Nouveau: Visiting the Elves

Another direction tending to the plant world. The Art Nouveau style, also known as tiffany and liberty, is characterized by floral motifs, fluid geometry, dynamic composition, and noble materials. Favorites: valuable types of wood, stained glass, expensive natural textiles.

A minimum of sharp and straight angles, a maximum of fluid forms. Any element in space, be it a doorway, a stair rail, or a sofa armrest, tends to imitate the smoothness of plant lines. The space is decorated with fantasy images of lilies, irises, peacocks, dragonflies, and beautiful maidens in the style of Klimt and Mucha.

Art Nouveau loves the large area, for this style the very place in the elven palaces from “The Lord of the Rings” and country mansions – on the basis of city apartments, Art Nouveau fully takes root badly. But its individual elements may well ascend on the basis of classics and modern styles in interior design.

Main pluses: Distorted geometry and decorative techniques of Art Nouveau make you feel as if you are in front of a forest dryad’s apartment, and not human habitation. Even individual elements can breathe a fabulous atmosphere into the space.

Suitable for: Romantic dreamers who want to bring a touch of magic to the atmosphere, lovers of nature, fantasy, and the fine art of the early 20th century.

Art Deco: Great as Gatsby

Determining which style of interior suits you is not so easy when you like “both”. You are not alone in your desire to combine all the best at once in one interior. This is how eclectic Art Deco was born. This style unabashedly combines avant-garde geometry, antique luxury, and African motives.

Art Deco is not about modesty. This trend in fashion and art originated between the two world wars, reflecting the desire for a peaceful life in luxurious surroundings. In the glamorous interior of the roaring 20s, mirrors, and gloss, precious and semi-precious metals gleam, there is a lot of marble, natural leather, and even skins of wild animals.

Today, Art Deco is no longer trend like The Great Gatsby and is more restrained. In a modern interpretation, the main style-forming elements are symmetrical composition, geometric reports, thin contrasting lines, metallic accents, and animal prints.

Main pluses: Art Deco is in trend.

Suitable for: Lovers of luxury who do not know how to choose an interior style worthy of a palace hall and do not go overboard with pathos. Art Deco can be very laconic and elegant and still luxurious.

Minimalism: Zen in the interior

Minimalism is one of the most popular trends in the world of interior design, which has gravitated towards restraint and functionality over the past few years. This is not just a laconic setting, it is a whole philosophy: as few unnecessary things in life as possible, as much light and space as possible.

Minimalism welcomes open floor plans, an abundance of light shades, and smooth surfaces. A minimum of details – all storage systems are hidden, even the fittings on the cabinets and kitchen units are missing. The pure decor is practically not found, the decorative function is taken over by functional items: lamps, pillows, appliances.

A color scheme is often based on just two or three basic shades. To prevent the setting from becoming completely Spartan, color accents, multi-level lighting scenarios and a variety of textures are welcome.

Minimalism in the interior can be divided into European and Japanese, the latter has a national flavor.

Main advantages: You can save on decorative elements and gain several tens of square meters. Cleaning in a space “cleared” of dust collectors will become a pleasure.

Suitable for: Ascetics looking for Zen in the interior, and rationalists who are sure that less is better.

Boho chic: the gypsy soul

What interior style suits you if your soul asks for a holiday and, together with the camp, rushes into the sky? Take a closer look at colorful boho – the complete opposite of minimalism.

This style came to us from Czech Bohemia, where many gypsy tribes used to live and have settled in houses and apartments around the world.

Bohemian gypsy in the interior is not limited in expressive means. Boho is a riot of colors, colorful ornaments, an abundance of decor, and variegated textures. There is a place here for the fruits of folk art and souvenirs found in bazaars and flea markets, vintage lace napkins and an old favorite armchair inherited from my grandmother. It is a good tone to decorate boho space with handmade: quilts, decorative pillows, dream catchers.

It should be understood that the bohemian interior is not mountains of colorful rags and not “gypsy” luxury from the Russian 90s, but elegant negligence, in which eras are fancifully combined. Many elements of boho interior borrow from the hippie aesthetics, which the fashion world has been looking back at for many years.

Such an interior can be more restrained or colorful to the fullest. The main rule is that you should like it.

The main advantages: What is old in another interior, in boho – an element of decor. All decorations can be made by hand.
