We tell you how to include metal in the interior of the kitchen and what to combine it with.
A metal kitchen is an unusual solution for the interior of an apartment or house. We are used to seeing such in public places, and for the house we choose wood, stone, MDF, and chipboard. Now in the interiors, there are fewer stereotypes and strict rules. Therefore, you can safely choose metal, and enjoy an unusual solution. And about how to properly fit it into the interior, with what to combine and how to care for, we will tell.
What metals are used
Most often you can see stainless steel kitchens. But there is also copper, brass, and bronze. Also, kitchen furniture manufacturers offer different finishes of stainless steel to imitate other types of metals.
Stainless steel
As we said, this is the most popular finish. Silver steel looks nice and stylish, but it also evokes that “restaurant-like” feeling that many people in a home setting might not like. Silver material can be textured: aged, wrinkled, or scratched for decorative purposes. In the same loft style, aged textures are used.
Copper
It has a pinkish-gold hue: it can go both pink and gold. In addition, there is also a brown-black color with green blotches, as a rule, this is the result of oxidation. Many sources write about the antibacterial properties of copper – supposedly, on such a surface, bacteria multiply less and die much faster.
Brass
This is an alloy of copper and zinc in golden color, which entered the list of interior design trends a few years ago. Brass is also actively used in living rooms: in accessories, furniture elements, and lamps. Like copper, it is subject to oxidation.
Bronze
Bronze (an alloy of copper and tin) can be found in the finish of sinks or faucets. It is not as bright as copper or brass, but rather a “dusty” color.
What elements can be decorated with metal?
Of course, it would be too much to decorate the entire space with this material. You can select several elements or stop only at the furniture. Here are some options.
Metal facades for the kitchen
Kitchens with metal fcabinets look stylish, especially if you choose a golden finish or a slightly aged finish. Shiny wardrobes make the interior luxurious and unique. This decor will fit into modern style, art deco, modern classics, and eclecticism. Silvery metal and material with a touch of rust will be ideal for a loft.
Countertop
A metal countertop for the kitchen is a great choice if you want to add an accent and diversify a solid color set. So, for example, you can choose a silver or gold color for white furniture. To black – the same silver and gold. The latter combination will make the interior visually more expensive, and black with silver is a classic combination of industrial aesthetics and minimalism.
Backsplash
A stainless steel kitchen backslpash will suit the loft aesthetic. But it is better if it is combined with the same countertop. Other types of metal can also be used for an apron, they will become an accent and attract attention. Caring for such a coating can be burdensome – splashes of water, and drops of fat fall on the apron. You will have to constantly wipe the surface dry so that untidy stains are not visible.
Plumbing fixtures
Sinks, faucets – all this can also be metal. You won’t surprise anyone with standard silver, but golden accents or pinkish shades can add individuality to the interior.
Home appliances
It is customary to see a stainless steel hood or oven. But brass, copper, and bronze are less common.
Free standing furniture
Shelves, tables, chairs, cabinets, and a kitchen island – all can be decorated with metal inserts. Such elements will be an excellent decorative and functional addition to the interior. Of course, if there is a place for them.
The minimum inclusion volume is fittings. Particularly cabinet handles. But this is too small an accent to call the kitchen “metal”. But familiar and understandable.
How and with what to combine
The most advantageous will look natural combinations in both colors and textures.
With Wood
A kitchen made of metal and wood is a classic that is impossible to lose. You can make a metal backsplash by adding a wooden set. Or decorate large-scale planes with wood: floor, ceiling, and walls, and fit a brilliant kitchen set into this space.
With stone
Stone texture – light, dark, and even colored marble – is another option for a successful combination. Choose a stone backsplash for a shiny kitchen set. Or decorate the countertop in this way.
With brick and concrete
We have already mentioned the style of the loft more than once. Brick and concrete are just the typical finishes for industrial aesthetics, they look very organic next to the metallic sheen. And it can be any material, not just silver stainless steel. The contrast between raw concrete and refined brass, for example, looks rich and unusual.
With natural shades
Brown, beige, white, deep green, and blue will look advantageous with both silver and gold. A glamorous interior will turn out if you combine pinkish copper or gold with shades of pink.
Features of care
The material is considered by many to be unpretentious. But it is not so. For example, stainless steel is quite difficult to keep perfectly clean without leaving streaks. Fingerprints and water drops will be visible on it. In production, a special finish can be applied to the surface so that traces form less and less often, but you still have to maintain cleanliness. It is also important to know that any metal (even stainless steel over time) oxidizes. A patina may form on the surface. To prevent this, manufacturers apply protective agents, improving the anti-corrosion properties of the material. But change cannot be avoided over time. Some even like these natural marks, while others are afraid of them – in this case, you will have to order polishing.
Scratches also remain on the facades and on the backsplash. Therefore, it is worth being careful in operation. However, scratches cannot be avoided on almost any material.
