Partitions, curtains, décor, light – with the help of all this, you can visually divide the space into zones. We talk about popular techniques and share interior options.
1. Partition
Dividing a room with a partition is one of the most popular ways of zoning. This is how you designate a wall, but you don’t build it.
2. Rack
A functional alternative to a partition is a shelving unit. It can occupy an impressive area, or it can be narrow or low.
3. Opening
A room divided into two parts by an opening is also a great solution. In the far part of the room, you can place a sleeping or working area.
The opening can be left empty or equipped with sliding doors – whatever you wish.
4. Niche
In niches, a sleeping area is often organized. The technique can be used in the children’s room, where it is also necessary to organize a workplace, or in a studio apartment, where there is simply no space for a separate bedroom.
Both a ready-made niche in the room and a self-made one, with the help of a partition, are suitable.
5. Curtain
Another popular solution for zoning a sleeping place is curtains. They can be used to curtain both a bed in a niche and a free-standing bed. During the reception and at night, the bed can be curtained, the rest of the time it can be kept open.
6. Podium
The area moved to the podium already seems to be a separate space. But you can complement the zoning with color or even a partition to enhance the visual effect.
A podium traditionally has a sleeping place (usually with storage space) and a work area. Although you can equip a game room, a library, and even a dining room there.
7. Color
Highlighting zones with different colors is a smart design move. However, you need to think over the right combinations of shades so that the interior looks solid and harmonious.
The color is also good to use to decorate an accent wall in one of the zones. See how the designers coped with this task for the zoning of the bedroom and kitchen.
8. Wall décor
“Wall” zoning is not limited to color — you can safely use décor for this purpose.
In this case, the living room area was marked with wallpaper with a geometric ornament, and the bedroom was highlighted with an original lamp. Color, however, was also used a little, but not on the walls, but in textiles.
9. Furniture
It is known that the back of the sofa can already separate one area from another. This technique is often used in the kitchen-living room.
More non-standard solutions are also acceptable. For example, in this room, the desk was “extended” to the wall and ceiling and thus delineated the border of the two zones.
In this studio space, the dining table was inscribed in a frame. It turned out to be a kind of partition.
10. Light
Well-thought-out lighting scenarios are not only the key to a comfortable life, but also a smart zoning technique. Try to choose lighting for different areas. For example, a floor lamp was installed in the living room, hangers were placed above the dining area, and the kitchen was accentuated with an LED strip.
Another option is to designate the working areas with suspensions, and table lamps were placed near the bed.
11. Carpet
A carpet is often used to unite a sofa group and delineate the living room area. In this example, the colors are correctly chosen: the shades of the carpet are combined with the bed linen. As a result, the living room area is separated from the bedroom, but there is no dissonance in the design.
Several carpets can also be used for zoning. For example, put the same ones in different zones, as in the photo below.
12. Different flooring
We often see this technique in the projects of hallways and kitchens-living rooms: in a more “branded” area, easy-to-clean tiles are laid, and for the rest of the space, wood or materials imitating it are used.
However, this zoning option can also be used in other rooms. So, in this bathroom, with the help of flooring, even three zones were outlined: the wet one was marked with tiles, the rest of the space was marked with wood, and a carpet was additionally laid in the resting place.
