We talk about the advantages and disadvantages of stretch, painted, and plasterboard ceilings.
Finishing Features
A spacious entrance area is an exception rather than the rule. Especially in a typical apartment. This must be taken into account when planning repairs. Here everything should be aimed at filling the space with air, its visual expansion. What is the best ceiling to make in the hallway?
- Complex multi-level designs look good only in large rooms. Small and dark, they do even less.
- The most important thing when choosing a ceiling design in the hallway is harmony and balance. This means that the more complex the walls and furniture, the simpler it should be. Even in the modern classical style, the textured part is kept to a minimum.
- If you want an accent, be sure to sketch with elaborate details. The more detailed, the better. Otherwise, there is a risk of spoiling the entire interior.
- The basic white surface fits in perfectly with any style.
Types of materials
Despite the variety of building materials, three types of finishes are most common. Let’s consider each in more detail.
1. Stretch ceiling in the hallway
The most popular finishing option, is characterized by an optimal price-quality ratio. However, there is an opinion that it poses a danger to the health of apartment owners. This is true, but only partly.
Indeed, low-quality materials that are used in cheap canvases or fittings can eventually lead to various kinds of diseases. However, products of well-known brands that have proven themselves in the market and have been certified are absolutely safe.
If two weeks after installation, there is a specific smell in the apartment, it is advisable to dismantle the coating.
There are two types of tension structures: fabric and PVC. If you don’t want to take risks, take fabric, it is more environmentally friendly, but also more expensive.
As for the design, there are three options:
- Glossy creates an almost mirror surface.
- Matte does not reflect light, looks like plaster or paint.
- Satin – in the middle, make the lighting soft.
How to do
The most reliable and safe texture is matte. It definitely will not spoil the design, which cannot be said about the once-popular gloss.
Be extremely careful with glossy color options. This is only acceptable in simple minimalism or modern contemporary. Good ideas are found in the photo of two-level stretch ceilings in the hallway: a combination of matte and glossy surfaces.
How not to do
Outdated design – photo printing. Clouds and sky, stars, and even geometric prints have lost their former gloss.
Plasterboard ceiling in the hallway
If the budget allows, this is the best solution. Main advantages: structural strength, ease of wiring in the space between the drywall sheet and the real ceiling.
Among the shortcomings: fear of moisture. However, many manufacturers offer moisture-resistant sheets, and their price is not much different from the usual ones. And the peculiarity of the installation: the hinged system will not work in a room with low ceilings, it will “eat” at least 4 cm. If it is critical, consider the option of stretch or ordinary plaster.
How to do
The suspended ceiling in the hallway in the photo looks very neat and stylish. It allows you to create almost any idea.
How not to do
Here’s what to avoid
- Smooth lines and curves in multi-level pavements, especially in typical narrow corridors. Straight clear lines are relevant, they look harmonious, and emphasize the geometry of space.
- Protrusions at an obtuse or acute angle.
- Multi-colored coatings – here the rules are the same as with stretch ones.
Painted ceiling
This includes both ordinary painting and more loft options when the surface is left unfinished. But, we must say, the second is relevant only for spacious high corridors. Or if they make up a single loft space.
If the hallway is small, there is only one option – classic plaster. By the way, it can be made textured or painted with acrylic paint – optimal for the entrance area.
How to do
Light colors that do not create an illusion of smaller ceiling height.
How not to do
- A bright color will create a feeling of limitation and constriction. This is not for narrow typical corridors with walls less than 3 meters high.
- In the hallway with poor lighting, it will look completely different. And even bright and cheerful can become dull and dark.
- Pure colors are less relevant today. Bright scarlet, bright yellow, and light green can greatly reduce the cost of the overall picture.
Lighting
Most often, the entrance area is not illuminated enough. There are no windows here, and natural light hardly penetrates. Therefore, it is worth considering the lighting system.
- The classic version is with one light source. Rarely seen today.
- Soffits or spotlights are used in conjunction with a chandelier, they look great separately in loft spaces.
- One of the most relevant designs is a led strip, fixed in multi-level structures. Such illumination creates the effect of “hovering”, the lightness of the top. It can be installed in both tension and suspension systems.
