How to combine warm and cold shades: 5 tips for the perfect interior

Are shades only divided into cold and warm? How to combine tones of different temperature spectrums? We answer these questions and tell you how to avoid mistakes.

1. Consider the features of a particular shade

At school, in drawing lessons, they teach us to divide colors into warm and cold. Red, yellow, and orange are warm, and blue, green, and purple are cold. In fact, everything is a little more complicated. One color always has dozens of tones that differ in temperature. For example, a berry red with a touch of purple is noticeably cooler than a red that is closer to orange. And the shade of Tiffany or sea wave is more comfortable than the usual blue or blue. Green can also be warm if there is an admixture of yellow in it, or cold when a blue tone is added.

Therefore, you should not immediately dismiss the shade if it belongs to a color that is considered cold. It is quite possible that your interior, with the right lighting, will look warm enough.

2. Start from the purpose of the room

Each room has its own functionality, and therefore its own suitable colors for decoration. For example, for a kitchen or office, you can use blue, green, and gray tones. These colors help to cheer up and concentrate. The living room, dining room, nursery, or bedroom is best decorated in warm colors – they relax and cheer up.

In rooms where there is no natural light, such as a hallway or a bathroom, warm colors will also look better, especially if you do not have the opportunity to use several different light sources. With good multi-stage lighting, however, you can try to decorate the hallway and bathroom in cool colors.

3. Rely on your preferences

Try to analyze which colors are closer to you in everyday life. To do this, open your wardrobe and count which shades are more in it. If there is no obvious bias in one direction or another, then in the interior you can select the tones of any temperature spectrum. If there is a clear trend towards one or another range, feel free to use it in interior design. It is very important at this stage not to start convincing yourself, for example, by noticing a beautiful blue wall in the design of your favorite cafe. If you want to experiment with colors that are unusual for you, use them as small accents.

4. Combine shades

Even if you really like only one of the temperature palettes, always dilute it a little with opposite shades. Cold colors bring a touch of freshness to a warm interior and vice versa. Without such contrasts, the room can become visually stuffy or unnecessarily cool. Also, these transitions add depth and versatility to the room.

5. Adjust space with color

Saturated warm shades will make a large room visually a little more compact and noticeably more comfortable. Cold tones, on the contrary, will add space to a small room.

It is important not to confuse the temperature of light shades. For example, for a low ceiling, you will most likely choose white paint. But white also has dozens of tones, among which there are warm ones obtained by adding beige. They will not add height to the ceiling. But white, slightly gone to blue, will make it visually higher.
