How to combine different types of wood in the interior: 6 win-win solutions

We have selected a variety of additions to light and dark wooden surfaces so that they look spectacular in the interior.

1. With white paint

A win-win Scandinavian combination – light wood and white paint. Even on the most overcast day, a house with such decoration and furniture looks cozy and filled with light. In this case, it is worth paying attention to the shades of wood: they are warm or cold. A cold undertone is usually found in spruce, birch, and aspen. In this case, with furniture or flooring, white tones with a slight admixture of blue will look good. And with warm ash, oak, and pine, you can combine light shades with a slight yellow bias.

Dark wood usually acts as an accent in the interior, so it can be balanced with white tones. In this case, Stockholm white works well.

2. With the brick finish

Any wooden texture looks good next to brickwork. Therefore, choosing an accent brick wall for a room, feel free to complement it with parquet, engineered board, or wood-like laminate. This combination of decoration looks perfect in an interior with hints of a loft. Wooden furniture against a brick background will also look appropriate. Be careful only with dark reds, such as plums and cherries. Make sure that such a cabinet or rack does not blend into the wall. It is better to place them in the opposite part of the room in order to get overlapping red tones in the interior.

3. With bright colors

Wood is a fairly neutral color material. Therefore, it is good for them to balance bright solutions in the interior, for example, a contrasting wall or a kitchen set in spectacular color. Be careful with very saturated shades of wood, which have pronounced notes of orange or red: pear, cherry, acacia, and oak. They are best used with neutral colors such as gray or beige.

4. With concrete

Wood and concrete will look good in a modern-style home with hints of urbanism and loft. We are talking not only about concrete walls but also about furniture, decor, or ceramic tiles made to look like concrete. Wooden surfaces soften the impression of a cold gray surface and make the interior more comfortable and harmonious. It’s great if the tree has a pronounced pattern – this will add texture.

5. With a different kind of tree

Different types of wood are well combined with each other. To make the combination harmonious, choose contrasting light and dark shades of wood. For example, wenge and maple. It will be good if you can separate them – a light floor and a dark ceiling, as in the example in the photo. Here, white walls act as a border between wooden surfaces. Thanks to this technique, the space turns out to be voluminous, with carefully crafted textures.

6. With stone

The combination of wood and stone surfaces creates a sense of space close to nature. Such an ensemble is easiest to fit into the interior of a kitchen or bathroom. In this case, both natural and artificial materials with texture imitation are suitable. The contrast of light and dark shades also works well here. For example, a light marbled panel on the wall and a dark smoked oak or acacia floor.

Trends 2023/2024: landscape carpets by Alexandra Kehayoglou

Argentinian artist and designer Alexandra Kehayoglou creates textured carpets that evoke the landscapes of her native country. In them, she documents the ecological changes in the landscapes of Argentina. The carpets show foliage left over years of land exploitation and the return over time of local flora and fauna, from thistles to deer. The works reflect changes in the environment, the need for change, and the hope of Argentines for a better future.
