Fresh and unusual: all about how to design a blue kitchen

The calmness and tranquility that the blue color is endowed with is often used by designers in the interior of the bedroom, living room, and even the bathroom. Is the color suitable for the kitchen? We prove yes.

Blue in kitchen design is a non-trivial solution. However, it deserves attention. A color that will refresh any interior, and looks noble and elegant. In addition, it does not overload the space and fills it with air. Therefore, it is suitable for decorating small rooms. We tell you what shades to combine it with and how to do it in the right proportions.

Color Features

On the one hand, it is an understandable color, familiar to everyone since childhood. In the interior, it is a light and gentle tone that cools the space. Designers use this property in southern rooms filled with sunlight. On the other hand, choosing a color scheme is not an easy task. The catch is that he behaves completely differently in artificial and natural lighting. It can turn blue and even give off turquoise if the light is yellowish. And if the room itself is dark, then it will turn gray. And even become dirty and dull in cloudy weather.

Before buying paint, it is important to paint on a wall, cardboard, or sheet of paper. Small samples with shades from the manufacturer will not give a complete picture, our eye perceives the palette better in bulk. You can buy samplers with the shades you like and paint part of the wall in the kitchen in blue tones yourself, or use large cardboard for this. See how the color behaves in different lighting conditions, in different weather conditions.

As for trends, complex tones remain the most relevant. These are Baby Blue and Cashmere Blue with the addition of gray in the Pantone palette, Moonstone Blue with turquoise in Scheme Color, Breath of Fresh Air silver by Benjamin Moore, and so on. The classic color scheme, which is obtained by whitening blue, looks somewhat naive. Pure color is rarely used today, mostly in eclectic kitsch designs.

The best color combinations

Pale blue is one color that is rarely surrounded by bright colors. You can use Itten’s color wheel for selection, but designers rarely do this. More precisely – almost never, except perhaps in experimental creative projects. When it comes to the interior design of a blue kitchen, there are several classic solutions to consider.

With white

This is the most obvious combination. No risk to miss: white emphasizes the coldness of the light blue range and gives it even more light. By itself, such a pair may even look too sterile (as in the bathroom), so designers often introduce a third shade or texture – beige or light wood. Light wood is a warm material. In color terms, this is a kind of ocher and yellow – in the color wheel, they are the contrast to blue.

With beige

Beige softens and warms the cold combination of blue and white. When choosing proportions in this range, there are no rules. As a base, light blue, white, and beige colors are used. You can complement the mix with warm metal: brass, copper, or gold. It can be headset handles, faucets, and kitchen appliances. This range is universal, the blue Provence-style kitchen will look great, in modern and American classics.

With blue

We are talking about monochrome solutions, where several shades of blue are used. Such an interior will not suit everyone, but if you are in love with this palette, why not consider such an extreme option?

This is a stone that is fashionable today, which looks modern and bright in color, and wood. Moreover, both a blue wooden kitchen and a set in natural shades of wood are suitable. Light or dark – depends on the base. The calmer it is, the lighter the wood should be.

With pink

This is the most contrasting combination in our selection. In fact, it is a classic and is used in the interior quite often, but dosed. When it comes to the design of the kitchen, then this decision can not be called popular. Although it looks very impressive. Especially if pink is represented not by color, but by texture – as in the photo below with a gas stove.

An alternative to pink is burgundy. In combination with burgundy, it is better to give preference to blue tones of medium saturation and brightness and not too light wood. But keep in mind that a small room in such a range will seem even smaller, a dark palette hides the area.

How to use the blue color in the interior of the kitchen

In fact, it serves both as a base and as an accent. In terms of implementation, it has already become universal.

Base

As a base, designers choose gray-blue shades that do not bother. In this way, walls and floors are decorated, and sets and large accessories, such as a carpet, are selected. In total, you get 60% of the main color in space. You can complement the base with accents with prints in the same range: ceramic tiles on the backsplash or on the floor, curtains.

Addition

This is the most common solution. An additional color is considered, which occupies about 30% of the interior. For this, a blue kitchen set or dining group is suitable. Moreover, when choosing the first, pay attention to the different options for execution. An idea to note: you can take not plain, but combined cabinets, for example, a white top and a blue bottom. They support the latter with an accent wall in the same color scheme.

Accents

Here we are not talking about small accessories such as towels and small household appliances, but rather large stains. This is a bright apron surrounded by a neutral base, a stove, a refrigerator – the latter technique is not so common in the works of domestic designers, but is often found in the West. Also, tiles on the floor in any area and a dining group can become stained. We do not recommend using the gradual introduction of decor. One large color spot, which is supported by small ones, looks much more harmonious in the interior. And not a lot of small ones smeared around the room.
