Design children’s room in a loft style, taking into account the age of the child

Pink for girls, blue for boys? If it seems to you that this rule has long been outdated, we offer a more modern option – design a children’s room in a loft style.

A loft-style nursery is a universal solution. So much so that it is suitable for any age and gender: both a three-year-old boy and a teenage girl. Today we are telling what to pay attention to when designing such a space and how to do it, taking into account the wishes of the child.

Key points to know about style

In the classical understanding, the loft space is a rough finish, raw wood, brick or concrete walls, and visible wiring. But for a child, this can hardly be called safe. Therefore, at the heart of a loft-style children’s room is the embodiment of industrial design ideas with the help of comfortable materials that do not pose a danger to the owner.

The second point is color. This is a brutal style, the range of which is made up of complex dark shades:  black , all shades of gray, terracotta, red and white. But, of course, a nursery decorated in this way may look too serious and even somewhat dull. Therefore, designers introduce saturated colors into the palette. Moreover, they are used both as a base and as accents – it depends on the customer. The classic light design with soft accents also looks impressive: it turns out an interesting combination of delicate colors and rough textures. Finally, the third – the loft is ideal for a teenager’s room. Even numerous diverse posters, paintings and drawings fit well into a rough finish. They create a nice “street effect” with randomly pasted ads and graffiti.

One of the main features of the living space in the loft is the absence of blank walls in the room. Zoning occurs with the help of decoration, furniture or light metal structures.

These rules apply to children as well. You can create zones by color or functional partitions, for example, shelving for books and toys.

Zoning features

  • The simplest design is for a newborn. There are three zones: a bedroom – a crib, storage – a chest of drawers or a closet, rest and feeding – a sofa or an armchair.
  • In the room of the baby and preschooler, the main thing is the play area. Toys, books, and favorite things of the child are stored here.
  • School-age is, first of all, a study area with a comfortable desk and chair, and a thoughtful storage system for books and supplies.

Finishing

Environmental friendliness and safety are the main criteria for choosing finishing materials.

Walls

Wallpaper or paint is usually used here . If you are renovating a preschool kid’s room, choose finishing materials that can be washed, such as vinyl or non-woven wallpaper. Among the paints and varnishes, water-borne (dispersion) paints will be suitable , but pay attention to the labeling.

Brickwork can be replaced with wallpaper with an appropriate print when it comes to a baby’s room.

If the daughter or son is of school age, you can use decorative plaster masonry. Moreover, you can do it yourself , and the child will certainly appreciate the process of creation.

Another cool technique that is often used in the design of a loft-style nursery is a slate wall. That’s where the scope for creativity! Thus, you can decorate the wall completely from floor to ceiling or part of it. To do this, use a special paint that falls on any surface. She tints beautifully.

An analogue of a slate wall, if a child has allergies or asthma, is a marker surface.

Floor

The floor must also meet quality and environmental standards. Most often it is covered with parquet or laminate. For the design of the loft, artificial materials with a natural wood finish are suitable.

To protect materials from falling heavy objects, scratches and chips in the play area, you can lay a carpet. Do not forget about soundproofing , the carpet will also help in this sense. Carpet is not the best covering for children. First of all, because it is impossible to completely clean the dust from it. As soft surfaces it is better to use carpets.

Ceiling

In finishing the ceiling of any apartment, a simple rule applies: the simpler, the better. The white matte ceiling is so versatile that it will fit in all areas. In a private house, you can decorate a high ceiling with wooden beams . It is definitely better to abandon suspended multi-level structures, various plasterboard protrusions, and complex figures. This design is no longer relevant, it cheapens any interior. And in industrial style it looks completely out of place.

Loft-style children’s furniture

Furniture supports the overall style.

  • For kids, furniture made of wood is suitable. This is an environmentally friendly and safe solution.
  • Curly cribs, fashionable today, can be easily added into the design. The main thing is that they should not be decorated with additional painting or a canopy.
  • For older children, you can choose a metal bed. It will perfectly emphasize industrial design. For example, IKEA has a two-tier Tuffing model or an attic-type product from the same series.
  • Open shelves and racks are also a feature of the industrial space. Choose from metal and wood.
  • In the same style, a desk is selected – with minimal decor.

Lighting

Visible wiring is not a very good solution for a nursery, and the age of the child does not matter here. It is better to isolate the wires and support the design with a chandelier or lamps.

  • If the room is large, you can use a large chandelier in the center and spotlights around the perimeter of the ceiling. Relevant are simple models of dark metal with shades without decor.
  • In narrow and small rooms, it is better to think over the lighting system pointwise, without a major accent. The lighting around the perimeter looks great.

Decor

Designers advise the following technique in decorating a nursery for a teenager in a loft style: parents choose the main finish, coordinate the choice with their daughter or son, and accessories and decor chosen by the child. Moreover, the industrial style will withstand any decorations, even if they do not match each other.

  • In spacious rooms, you can focus on the wall in the form of graffiti.
  • In small ones, you can replace them with neat paintings or color blocks on the wall.
  • Posters and photos will look more harmonious if you allocate a special place for them. Aerobatics: group them by color.
