Decorating a bedroom in Scandinavian style: the most complete guide

Not a trend, but a classic – we tell you how to decorate a bedroom interior in a Scandinavian style, and show beautiful photos for inspiration.

The ideal bedroom design is practical, cozy, and calm. It helps you relax and also sets the tone for the new day. And the Scandinavians know a lot about this – it’s not for nothing that their style has become so popular that it has survived a shortage of trends and is rightfully considered a new classic. In this article, we tell you how to decorate a bedroom in a Scandinavian style and share photos of beautiful rooms.

Features of Scandi

Main associations with Scandi: IKEA, white color, budget renovation. Partly fair, but this style is not limited to them. Let us highlight the main features of this direction.

Simplicity

Important: simply does not mean boring or poor. The main idea is that there is no cramping or clutter, each thing has its own place and its own role. A Scandinavian-style bedroom in a house or apartment does not have to be exaggeratedly minimalistic, but every little detail must be thought out, including decor or textiles.

Laconic shapes and simple color schemes are welcome. Inspiration can be drawn from nature: this applies to materials, prints, and palettes. The environment should be pleasing to the eye, calm, and relaxing, without unnecessary distracting elements.

Lots of light

Our climate zone and the Scandinavian climate zone have one important common denominator – a lack of sunlight. The interior should solve exactly this problem, especially in the bedroom, so that you want to wake up in the morning and have the strength to start a new business. How to achieve this?

  • Light colors – white, beige, light gray, and other similar shades visually increase the space.
  • Large window and door openings. If this is not possible, then do not cover the windows with heavy dark curtains, but give preference to natural fabrics of medium density. The classic door can be replaced with a leaf with glass inserts.
  • If you need to highlight several functional areas inside the room (especially if the bedroom is combined with the living room ), abandon solid partitions in favor of light-transmitting structures. Slats, racks, and glass screens are suitable.

Focus on comfort

Practicality, coziness, comfort – for Scandinavians these concepts are combined, complementing each other and promoting the hygge philosophy to the masses. Therefore, when designing a recreation area, first of all, you need to focus not on a formal set of rules, but on your own preferences. After all, everyone’s concept of comfort is different.

You might want to wake up surrounded by a dazzling white finish that might seem hospital to some. Or do you think a Scandinavian-style bedroom with black walls would be cozy? Some people like open storage, while others are not ready to constantly wipe dust on the shelves. Adhere to the basic canons in the design of the sleeping area, but you can and should adapt them to suit yourself.

Caring for nature

Concern for the environment has been running through most design decisions for several years now, and the philosophy of conscious consumption fits perfectly into the concept of Scandi style.

The desire for environmental friendliness is expressed in a variety of manifestations: natural materials,  conscious consumption, products made from recycled materials, lamps that do not run on batteries, etc.

Design ideas

Now let’s take a step-by-step look at how to decorate the interior.

Colors for a Scandinavian-style bedroom

Light shades dominate the palette, and there are several reasons for this.

  • They visually increase the area of the room and add air to the space.
  • This is a universal background that goes with any color and perfectly complements the texture of the wood.
  • Warm colors (beige, pearl, ivory, milky, peach) compensate for the lack of sun.
  • White does not distort the perception of other colors; against its background, they are fully revealed.

From the last point, it follows that bright accents are not prohibited. The main condition is to use deep, preferably natural tones. No acidity or synthetics. Ideal candidates for complementary colors: all berry shades, brown, blue, dark green, and mint, peach, ocher, or terracotta. At the same time, the interior can be monochrome  – in this case, the achromatic range is compensated by a variety of textures.

Materials

Scandinavian-style bedroom design involves the use of natural materials. If the repair is budget-friendly, some can be replaced with analogs, but it is important that they are environmentally friendly. From natural materials, use wood as much as possible in any form; natural fabrics (linen, cotton, wool, etc.); baked clay; rattan, jute, and straw.

They can be supplemented with aluminum and glass, natural wood can be partially replaced with MDF or chipboard. But it’s better to refuse plastic products.

Finishing

Scandinavian style in the bedroom interior is manifested in laconic finishing, the emphasis is on the durability and practicality of materials. The situation is easiest with flooring: parquet or wooden boards are the priority. They can be contrasting dark or bleached. The ceiling is simple, snow-white. If the other finish is also white, it is better to make it 1-2 shades lighter.

Walls provide more space for creativity. They can be decorated using light or dark paint; decorative plaster; wooden panels; imitation brickwork; or eco-friendly wallpaper. For the entire perimeter, plain ones or with a non-contrasting pattern are suitable. If one accent wall is decorated with wallpaper (most often behind the headboard), you can use a more active pattern: abstract, geometric, or natural.

Furniture

There should be little furniture, only the essentials. A universal set – a bed, a wardrobe or chest of drawers, bedside tables. If space allows, you can organize a small seating area in the room, for example, an armchair or poufs by the window. An alternative is a small dressing table or workstation.

All furniture should be laconic, simple in form, and functional. For Scandinavians, the problem of square meters is also relevant, so pay attention to the possibilities of additional storage. For example, these could be drawers for linen under the bed, a ladder rack, a storage system under the windowsill, etc.

Decor

The amount of decor depends on personal preferences: you can reduce it to a minimum or decorate the room with many little things dear to your heart. The main thing is that every detail is added to the environment consciously.

Scandinavians use any objects as decorations – for example, even a linen robe or house dress can become part of the decor, but also standard options.

  • Posters and paintings – in simple frames or without them at all.
  • Aroma candles.
  • Natural elements – stones, branches.
  • Decorative ceramics.
  • Live indoor plants.
  • Dried flowers in a vase.
  • Mirror in a vintage or simple wooden frame;
  • Wicker compositions.

Textile

Particular attention is paid to textiles – this is what makes the room truly cozy. Preference is given to natural fabrics, but high-quality combined ones can also be used. Bed linens can be a neutral solid color or a bright accent that sets the mood – and this is also the fastest way to change the atmosphere without resorting to repairs or rearrangements.

The set does not have to be perfectly ironed: natural fabrics wrinkle easily, and natural folds combined with rough textures give the setting its own special charm. Blankets and decorative pillows can also be thrown slightly casually on the bed.

It is better to use simple curtains. Standard curtains without drapery, Roman curtains, roller blinds, and blinds are suitable. If the windows face south, you can complement the window textiles with blackouts.

Lighting

White walls alone cannot compensate for the lack of sunlight, so special attention is paid to artificial lighting. It is in this matter that it is worth discarding asceticism and organizing sufficient, and most importantly, multi-level illumination, as in the photo below.

So, the bedroom should have several lighting scenarios.

  • The main one is a fairly bright ceiling lamp in a laconic shade; you can use a wooden, wicker, or fabric lampshade.
  • Additional – a lamp or floor lamp to illuminate a certain area.
  • Local – table lamp, backlight, or wall sconces with softer and diffused light.

And garlands, decorative lanterns, candles, or other decorative lighting will help create an intimate and at the same time cozy mood in the bedroom.
