With the variety of materials used to decorate walls, MDF panels are lost. But the ease of installation, the variety of textures and colors, as well as the quality characteristics of this type of finish make us pay attention to them.
Previously, MDF wall panels were associated with the interior of offices, corridors, and glazed balconies. Today they find much wider application and are found in the projects of many designers.
Advantages of MDF panels for walls in the interior
One of the main advantages of the material is the price. They are cheaper than other natural finishing materials. In addition, they can imitate any texture: wood, plastic, decorative plaster, tile, or brick. They have plasticity, so they can be given any shape, achieving curved lines if the design task requires it.
The second most important advantage is environmental friendliness. The panels can be used in a children’s room, as natural materials are used in their production – fine shavings and wood resins. True, it is desirable that the young inhabitants of the house have already reached the age when walls seem like a tempting field for creativity and experimentation. Alas, a scratched and damaged surface cannot be restored. With the correct selection of thickness and dimensions, the slabs can withstand quite heavy loads; decor and furniture can be attached to them.
MDF panels have good heat and sound insulation properties. Contrary to popular belief, modern materials are not afraid of moisture. Thanks to repeated impregnation with water-repellent ingredients, they are resistant to fungus and do not require additional treatment; they can easily withstand temperature changes. Therefore, MDF panels can be used in the interior of the hallway and bathroom.
In addition, they are easy to install and adjust to each other. You can hide communications under them and use them to disguise not-very-attractive sections of the wall. Durability of use is another plus. A carefully processed panel with high-quality coating does not lose its shape, color, and other characteristics for many years. Also, light wet cleaning is not contraindicated for the material, although it should be done using soft fabrics and without the use of abrasive cleaning agents.
A nuance that owners of small apartments will like: it is not necessary to create a sheathing that eats up free space for them. But to do without a wooden or metal frame and simply install the slabs on glue, you need smooth walls.
By the way, it is for compact rooms that craftsmen advise choosing slatted products (they are oblong slats), because they visually expand the room.
MDF panels can also be used for zoning. They are not only solid but also “openwork”, allowing light to pass through, so you don’t have to be afraid of overly darkening the room.
Types of MDF wall boards
They come in different thicknesses – from 3 to 60 mm. The variety of options allows you to use them in different rooms.
Laminated
Laminated MDF panels look good in the interior of the living room and bedroom. A thin film applied to the surface will give a noble gloss. In addition, they can be used in kitchens. You can combine different laminated options with each other or combine them with matte ones, getting a variety of textures and shades in one room.
Veneered
During their production, a thin veneer of natural wood is attached to the main glued massif. They have a natural, individual pattern and add charm to the bedroom or living room.
Glossy
Good for decorating hallways, living rooms, and bathrooms. The transparent film used to cover the top looks especially advantageous in combination with natural stone or wood: the mix of rough texture and light, almost mirror-like materials adds sophistication.
For painting
They come in glossy and matte finishes. Here you can play with colors and choose interesting solutions. Such MDF panels would be appropriate in the interior of a nursery to decorate an accent wall.
3D panels
Such panels with three-dimensional drawings, relief images, or mosaics printed on them allow you to create entire decorative compositions, the effectiveness of which will be emphasized by the play of light and the tasteful furnishings of the apartment.
Water repellent
Finally, the water-repellent models mentioned above can be used in the design of bathrooms, toilets, kitchen areas, loggias, and even open terraces.
Whatever type of panels you choose, we do not recommend playing them safe and covering them with varnish so as not to interfere with vapor permeability. Otherwise, fungus may form between the wall and the coating.
MDF material is not so easy to spoil, but in case of possible damage, you need to have additional panels in stock. They are easy to change individually without redoing the entire wall. To ensure that the new fragment does not have a different shade, it must be from the same series as the entire batch.
Interior use
MDF boards are a universal material. They are used both for basic finishing and in the design of accent areas.
Living room
A common design solution is an emphasis on the TV area. 3D panels with patterns are especially relevant today. In the photo, such solutions in modern and minimalist designs look impressive. A simpler option is a veneered product. These are often used to decorate a wall completely.
Kitchen
One of the newest techniques is finishing the apron with a wooden slab. Take a more modest or more textured option – both will be appropriate in any style and in any color scheme. In combination with neutral tones: beige, white, gray, and a muted palette, wood will become an accent. It can neutralize brighter colors: rich turquoise, yellow, purple, green, and even red sets with a wooden apron that look great.
Instead of an apron, the dining area is sometimes decorated in this way if an accent is needed in this group. Most often, this solution is found in the combined spaces of the living room, kitchen, and dining room.
Bedroom
In this room, slabs of wood usually also act as an accent – they are placed on the wall at the head of the bed.
Sometimes the panels serve as the basis for the entire interior. But this is a good option for spacious rooms. In small spaces, a “box” effect will appear; visually, wood reduces the area of the room.
Bathroom
The use of MDF boards in the bathroom is no longer uncommon today. With their help, separate zones are distinguished: the shower wall, the space near the sink or toilet, and a section of the wall at the entrance.
