Overlooking the Luxembourg Gardens, these apartments are set in an eighteenth-century mansion significantly rebuilt after the French Revolution. Not much has been preserved from the historical elements here, so the architect Alireza Razavi, Razavi Studio, decided to give the interior a new life from scratch.
The 225-square-meter apartment is located in one of the oldest districts of Paris and is surrounded by an impressive cityscape of private houses, churches, and squares. Working on the project, the architect decided to start with the sensations that this place causes. Thus, the idea of a space that would remind of the nearby monasteries appeared.
The starting points were the natural light entering the apartment from three sides, and the architecture of the building itself. The Razavi studio team emphasized the materiality of the load-bearing walls and columns with the help of decoration and using gypsum stucco, creating a play of light and shadow. A restrained color palette and an abundance of curved shapes allow you to avoid the appearance of sharp shadows and create a peaceful space in which sound, light and visual images become part of a single whole. A thorough selection of furniture and works of art also works on the holistic perception of the interior.
The central area of the living room is “embraced” by a ring of sofas created by Ateliers Jouffre and designed by Studio Razavi. They are complemented by a wooden Kauri table from Riva 1920 and a pair of T1 tables designed by Osvaldo Borsani. A bright accent is the LTE10 floor lamp, designed by Luigi Caccia Dominioni. Under your feet is the Eclipse Disc I carpet by Tai Ping. An important place in the living room is occupied by the art – the space above the fireplace is given to the aluminum mask Aluminium Coin Mask III (2008) by Thomas Hausigo, on the adjacent wall the attention is drawn to the work of Richard Serra AR Horizontal # 13 (2017), and on the shelf – Interaction of Color, 1963 (1963) by Joseph Albers. A serious selection of vases includes both works by contemporary authors, such as Kiho Kang, and antiques, for example, an Egyptian vase of carved alabaster from 1500-1000 BC.
For the dining room, the studio also designed a couple of pieces of furniture. The dining table with expressive legs was made by Margraf & Vetreria Re, and the cabinet for dishes was made by Pascal Michalon. Chairs with wicker seats and backrests – designed by Carlo Hauner. The table is illuminated by the Trizo 21 chandelier, and comfort is added by the Golran carpet. The work of Daniel Buren (Peinture blanche sur tissu rayé blanc et marron, 1973) occupies a wall between large windows. In the room, you can also see the work of Richard Serra (Path and Edges #13, 200) and antique objects: a mask from South Arabia (1st century BC – 1st century AD) and a fragment of a tombstone stele (Abbasid Caliphate, 9th-10th centuries).
The kitchen has a warm texture and color of natural wood. The kitchen set and the sculptural island are complemented by MenuSpace stools and a Trizo 21 pendant lamp. Household appliances – Gaggenau and Miele, mixer – Cea Design.
In the master bedroom, the bed designed by Studio Razavi was made to order in Ateliers Jouffre. We added Fontana Arte bedside lamps and Hermès plaid. For the other two bedrooms, we chose beds from Pianca and Trizo 21 lamps. A comfortable place to work was provided with the help of a roomy table and a La Chance chair. In the bathrooms, Gessi, Roca, and Tubes Radiatori plumbing is used. Tiles — Living Ceramics. The luminaire is Kundalini.
