All about how to use moldings on the walls in the interior: styles, methods, examples

We tell you how to use moldings in the design of the walls of the living room, kitchen, and bedroom.

Interior moldings are almost always a good idea. With the help of such a small detail, you can improve any design: it will become a little more restrained, stricter, and more accurate, and classical notes will appear. We tell you how to use this decor.

Stylistic features

Let’s start with the main question: what are moldings in the interior? This is the name of a decorative element such as a rail, which decorates walls, doors, doorways, ceilings, and even floors. Planks appeared in France during the Rococo period, and still have not lost their relevance. And in recent years, on the contrary, they can be increasingly seen in the photo of the projects of designers.

Why are they used?

  • Firstly, with the help of a thin elegant rail, you can visually adjust the space: stretch and expand. For this, appropriate shapes and forms are selected. For example, more elongated horizontal rectangles expand, while narrow vertical ones stretch the room. Wide slats near the ceiling can slightly reduce its height.
  • Secondly, they can enhance zoning and decor. They look elegant on their own, but there are also additional elements that can be used for greater effect.
  • Finally, they can be used to hide repair errors.

Despite the fact that earlier the rail on the wall was used only in classical sublime styles, nowadays it is used in different directions. We show you the most interesting ones.

Neoclassic

It is easiest to enter wall decor here because this is a modern reading of the classics. The degree of pomposity and the number of details depends on the relevance and the design itself: in some interiors, the rail is combined with stucco, silk-screen printing, and frescoes.

Modern

Here the application is more modest. Often designers use contrasting moldings in the interior of the living room or to match the main design. These are not so richly decorated spaces, the main idea is the severity of forms and lines.

This also includes the style of the middle of the 20th century – mid-century with its restrained and soft design.

Eclecticism and kitsch

There are no rules as such here. Designers come up with and embody sometimes the craziest ideas, combining lath with brightly printed wallpaper, classic statues, and designer furniture.

Options for using moldings on the walls in the interior

Thin decorative slats can be introduced into the design in different ways. Everything depends on the goal. Let’s consider a few tricks.

Zoning

A studio apartment or a combined kitchen-living room – the functionality of the space does not matter. But if the area is small, and you do not want to build partitions, walls, and clutter up the room with furniture, pay attention to the finish.

Neat decoration on the wall, even in tone, can visually emphasize the dining or relaxation area. Usually decorative rectangles and squares are made for this.

Accent

Not the most obvious solution, but very effective. With the help of slats create a pattern on the walls. These can be simpler squares or active stripes. The latter set the dynamics and makes even the simplest room more interesting.

Additional decor

Moldings are used in the interior and to separate the wallpaper. Thus, a horizontal joint is formed. Moreover, the rail can be contrasting or in the color of the walls – choose any option.

Even bas-relief rectangles are often used to emphasize paintings or even TV. It creates the effect of a frame within a frame.

What is important to remember if you decide on such decoration? Thin planks require space. It is not worth decorating and highlighting a small wall in this way, otherwise, it will turn out cramped and low. The bas-relief will distort the perception of space. And, if the wall is small, this distortion will not be good.

Examples in different rooms

In fact, decorative thin ledges can be used in almost any room.

Living room

This is, of course, the most obvious option. Here they decorate the wall in the recreation area. Usually line up repeating elements above the sofa. If there are several rectangles, the additional decor is not needed. If he is alone, central, then the pictures will not interfere.

Solutions in the form of several rectangles inscribed in each other look interesting. They can be monochrome or, conversely, bright. For example, multi-colored, filled wallpaper with different prints. It turns out a kind of decorative panel.

Pay attention to the interesting color-blocking technique, which is effectively combined with strict decorative trims.

Kitchen

We are talking about decorating the dining area or living room if the space is combined. Thus, an accent-free wall is distinguished near the table or rest group. Solutions with TV framing are interesting – the principle is the same as in the living room.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, slats also act as an accent, and most often – at the head of the bed. Inscribed rectangles, repeating elements, or more modest single lines – are used in different ways.

Types of decorative strips

The choice of a particular type of plank depends on the purpose of use and budget. They are made from different materials.

  • Gypsum. Historically, this type of decor was made from it. It is still used in the living room and bedroom. But it is not cheap and is afraid of moisture. It is difficult to work with it and requires accuracy and careful care.
  • Tree. Also quite capricious and expensive material. But he has no equal when it comes to carved planks. It is afraid of water and also needs some care.
  • Polystyrene. Options made of artificial materials are not afraid of water, they are easy to work with. They weigh a little, and therefore polystyrene moldings are installed on the ceiling, in the interior they look no worse than stucco. True, they are not so easy to paint, they require disguise. Otherwise, they will look cheap and ruin any repairs.
  • Polyurethane. Another nice material to work with. It bends easily, so you can even create angled shapes and curved lines. Like polystyrene, it is not afraid of moisture and is resistant to temperature extremes. Polyurethane planks are suitable for decorating hallways and bathrooms.
