9 design hacks for the kitchen that we spotted in our designers’ projects

Design projects are immediately visible: they are thoughtful, functional, and look stylish. They don’t use magic secrets to implement them—professional knowledge and interesting solutions help. We’re talking about the latter in this collection – save cool design hacks.

1. Minibar in the top row of lockers

The standard dining table was abandoned in this project. Instead, they made a bar counter, extending the kitchen countertop to the corner. There was a minibar above the counter. To do this, the upper outer cabinet of the kitchen was left without fronts and a wine tray and rails for glasses were placed on the shelves.

2. Backsplash in the color of the facades

For this Stalinist kitchen, designer Natalya Komova chose a kitchen set with cabinets up to the ceiling, in two rows. Facades in delicate coffee color. A stone countertop was chosen in approximately the same shade, which was also used to cover the backsplash area. As a result, the entire kitchen set with finishing looks like one piece, which visually lightens the space.

3. Bar counter by the window

The dining area in this spacious apartment has been moved into the living room, while the kitchen is located separately. We made it as functional as possible and even used the space by the window: the window sill was removed and part of the U-shaped set was extended instead.

Since there is enough storage space, they did not make drawers under the window but left a tabletop, a kind of semi-bar area, on which it is convenient to cook and have a quick snack without setting the table.

4. Living room atmosphere in the kitchen

When you enter this kitchen it feels like it is a living room. All due to the finishing, furniture, and decor that are usually used in living rooms – living room and bedroom.

In the functional part, everything is standard – a spacious kitchen unit with the necessary set of household appliances. But on the wall in the dining area, there is a panel “Snow-covered Christmas trees in the mountains” with a black baguette around the perimeter. Also in this area was placed a velour couch in rich blue, a handmade red vintage sideboard, and a rug. The result is a bright and cozy interior.

5. Backsplash made of wallpaper and glass

In this euro-bedroom apartment, the designers of the LINART studio needed to preserve open space. Therefore, the kitchen was divided into two parts – a storage area with household appliances and a work area for cutting, washing, and cooking.

In the work area, a linear kitchen set was made in calm shades and without unnecessary details. And the main character here was the backsplash. Instead of the conventional porcelain stoneware, textile wallpaper with a wheat-colored wicker texture was glued onto the backsplash and covered with ordinary glass. It looks impressive, plus the surface is easy to care for.

6. Breezer in the locker

One of the conditions of the apartment owner was the installation of breathers in each room. These household appliances themselves are quite bulky and do not look very aesthetically pleasing in the interior. But designer Anastasia Kholoptseva managed to fit the breather even into the kitchen – it was hidden in the lowermost cabinet on the right.

For air exchange, they came up with a vertical pattern of holes in the front of the cabinet. And so that it wouldn’t look lonely, they balanced it with the same one, but horizontally, in the cabinets above the hood.

7. Disguised hood with ventilation

The customer purchased this four-room apartment as an investment and plans to rent it to a family with a child. Since the ceilings are high – three meters, it was expensive and not very convenient to make a kitchen set to fit the ceiling. As a result, designer Anastasia Gladysheva designed one part of the set to be noticeably lower, and the second with only a single upper cabinet. The hood and ventilation were hidden in the closet.

8. Mirror panel under the ceiling

As a result of the renovation, this two-bedroom apartment was combined with a kitchen and a living room. To accommodate all the household appliances and have plenty of storage space, the set was made L-shaped. Light facades do not overload the interior, and cabinets up to the ceiling add height to the space. To emphasize this effect and at the same time hide the monolithic beams, the space above the window was covered with mirrors.

9. Bench-window sill

The apartment of designer Evgenia Maraskova-Grigoryants has large windows with low and wide window sills. It will not be possible to turn such a window sill into a table or bar counter, but you can organize a place to relax. This is what they did in the kitchen: they put large pillows on the windowsill, and placed a dining group next to it – there was more seating space.
