6 annoying mistakes when designing narrow room

Forget about the carpet, make all the walls light, and use only closed storage – find out what not to do when planning and decorating a narrow room.

1. Lay laminate across the room

An unobvious mistake that is easy to miss during the repair stage: lay out a floor with a pattern that will run parallel to a long wall. Such a floor covering visually narrows and stretches the space even more. Most often, such a mistake is made with laminate.

What to do

Lay the laminate across the room, as in the examples. You will have to cut the boards, and laying will take a little more effort and time, but you will visually expand the room, and the space will look harmonious.

2. Forget about the carpet

It may seem that a large carpet is out of place in a small room, but this feeling is deceptive. In fact, if the floor does not attract the eye, then the entire visual focus will shift to the window, and this will emphasize the unsuccessful geometry of the room.

What to do

Feel free to choose a carpet with horizontal contrasting stripes to visually expand the space, or just a large bright model to divert attention from long walls to the floor.

3. Make all walls the same color

Everyone knows that when decorating a small room, it is worth making light walls that will expand the space and add “air” to the room. But if the room is very elongated, this technique is likely to be insufficient.

What to do

Use one wall as an accent to influence the visual perception of the interior. For example, you can make a narrow wall near the window dark and complement the composition with a dark floor. The ceiling and walls on the sides will remain light and play brighter in the interior, opening up the room.

Another way is to accentuate one of the long walls. To do this, you can use bright wallpaper with a contrasting pattern or pattern. This technique, as it were, separates the wall from the rest of the room.

4. Use only closed storage

When choosing cabinets in a narrow room, it is customary to first of all take care of their width and how to maintain a convenient passage. But it is also important to think about open storage. The fact is that closed cabinets merge with the walls and do not catch the eye. As a result, the problem of perception of space does not disappear anywhere.

What to do

Add open shelves, especially on narrow walls. So you will draw attention to them, as well as increase the storage area. The interior will look more thoughtful and comfortable.

5. Uneven placement of the furniture in the room

When choosing a place for a bed or desktop, many people make the mistake of leaving most of the furniture in one part of the room. As a result, part of the space near the window remains empty, the interior looks unevenly loaded.

What to do

Move everything important closer to the window. Place the bed close to it, placing it across the room. Hang posters or photos on the wall, and move a dresser or bedside table.

Also at the window, you can arrange a place to work. This will be good for the eyes and will create the right mood, and the table will give a horizontal line that will expand the room.

6. Forget about lighting

One of the most annoying mistakes that can be made in an elongated room is not using enough light sources. Because of this, darkened uncomfortable corners, and shadows from large furniture will appear. The interior will be gloomy and uncomfortable.

What to do

Arrange multiple light sources, but not in a single line. Let there be a floor lamp in the corner, a chandelier hanging closer to the window, and a pair of sconces above the bed.
