We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of white furniture and show examples for the kitchen, living room, bedroom, nursery, hallway, and bathroom.
Light furniture still causes concern for many: too catchy, uncomfortable, and impractical. Is it really? Of course not. Due to the variety of shades and combinations with other elements, white furniture in the interior looks spectacular, fresh, and quite comfortable. In this article, we share tips on how to choose the right one and ideas on what to combine with.
Pros and cons of white furniture
White is the most versatile and at the same time the most difficult color to use. He has many fans and as many opponents.
Benefits of white furniture
- Versatility – fits into any style, from strict classics to hi-tech.
- Inconspicuous – a light base will be a great backdrop for brighter details.
- Expressiveness – White shifts the focus from the color itself to the shapes and lines.
- Optical properties – light elements visually make the interior more spacious, airy, and lighter, which is especially important if the room has small windows or they face the north side.
- You can combine white with any colors: contrasting and similar, cold and warm, saturated and pastel.
Of course, there is another side of the coin. If you choose the wrong tone or go too far with white, it will make the interior cold, monotonous, and uncomfortable. This can be avoided if the achromat is dosed. Another drawback is the possible soiling of soft upholstery in this color. But it is leveled for cabinets or chests of drawers – dust is not visible on white.
Room interiors with white furniture
Kitchen
Kitchens are increasingly decorated in a white palette – because it is stylish, versatile, and surprisingly practical. The snow-white set looks equally good in a luxurious classic interior, in a Scandinavian style, and in restrained modern minimalism.
This design is especially relevant in studios and standard apartments, where the area of the cooking zone is limited to a few square meters. Smooth light facades mask the real volumes of the room, making the space airier. You can enhance this effect with the help of total white furnishings, choosing the same color for the surrounding objects, as well as using mirrors, non-bulky furniture, and light wall and ceiling finishes.
If a monochrome interior seems too bold, you can make part of the kitchen light – for example, only the upper or lower cabinets, a dining group, or a bar counter. An interesting option is a white kitchen with a wooden countertop. This is a popular combination in many styles, especially in practical Scandinavian or eco-interiors. The advantage of this combination is that the kitchen immediately becomes naturally cozy.
So that such an interior does not get lost and does not seem monotonous, you can add several dark colors to the palette (brown, black, or any other bright). In the design of the room, they can be used as just a few inclusions, but even so, the design will already become more dynamic. The role of such focus points can be played by lamps, accessories, a backsplash, and decor.
Living room
The living room is rarely decorated completely in bright colors – this room should be conducive to relaxation and be as comfortable as possible. There are two most popular design solutions.
- White furniture as an accent against a darker and more saturated background (for example, a creamy sofa, a coffee table, or a couple of armchairs, plus contrasting wallpaper or paint on the walls).
- A monochrome bright environment with an emphasis on cozy textures (wood, linen, wool, rattan, velvet, corduroy, etc.) and various combinations of several, mostly warm shades of white, beige, and gray.
Another interesting solution for a living room of any size is a white storage system. It can be a large built-in wardrobe, which, due to the neutral color, “dissolves” into the wall and does not seem so voluminous, as well as a chest of drawers or a shelving unit. If you collect something or like to read, a large open shelving unit will look beautiful on the entire wall, which will accommodate little things or books.
The main advantage of such furniture in the living room is that, regardless of its dimensions, it will not seem bulky and heavy. In addition, it is a very versatile shade that allows you to change the atmosphere of the room as often as you want. It is enough to replace textiles and add a couple of accessories, and from a delicate and pastel room it will become bright and catchy – and vice versa.
Bedroom
The interior of the bedroom with white furniture perfectly matches the essence of the room – cleanliness, relaxation, and time alone with yourself. Furnishings here can be either part of the overall color scheme of the room, or contrasting elements against a dark background.
The obvious solution is a snow-white bed, since most often in a bedroom, especially a small one, this is, if not the only, then one of the few pieces of furniture. And on such a bed, especially with a soft frame, it seems that in a dream you are floating on a cloud. In addition, at any time you can add colors to the decor of the room with the help of bright bedding and accessories.
Another option is to choose a light cabinet or a chest of drawers. If the bedroom is small in size and there is not enough light in it, this is a real must-have, since the room needs to be visually expanded and the clutter effect should be avoided. Additionally, multi-level light, loose curtains on the windows and, of course, a mirror will help to increase the volume.
If you want to design a simple modern bedroom with a discreet palette, but the most comfortable atmosphere, textiles made from natural fabrics, indoor plants, and decor made from natural materials (wood, rattan, clay, stone) will help.
Kids room
The white set fits perfectly into the nursery. First, it is the color of purity and innocence. Secondly, it is neutral, does not have a negative impact on the psyche, and helps the kids calm down. Finally, this color does not have any gender coloring and therefore is well suited for a room where children of different genders live.
And if the child is still small, such a neutral design will be an excellent base. In the future, it will be possible to complement the room with details of the child’s favorite color, as well as his colorful drawings and toys.
Another plus is that light surfaces are less easily soiled than black ones, so this solution is optimal for a nursery, especially if the child is active, and loves outdoor games and creativity.
Hallway
It may seem that white furniture in the interior of the hallway is the height of impracticality because this is a “dirty” area, but the problem is solved by choosing high-quality material. The advantage of such a solution is obvious: the entrance hall in the apartment, as a rule, is small in size and dark due to the lack of natural light. These shortcomings are leveled by a bright environment.
When you need to organize a large storage system in the corridor, then a wall-height wardrobe and a console paired with it are the ideal solutions. It will be visually perceived easier and not overload the space, and a large light surface, combined with good lighting, will visually expand and fill a small room with light.
To hide the boundaries of the room, it is better to choose a neutral finish: either pastel shades or completely matching the furniture. And if the ceiling is also snow-white, then the space will stretch not only in width but also in height.
If a completely snow-white design seems too strict and uncomfortable, it can be used as an accent – for one object or diluted with other textures and shades. So, for example, it goes well with wood, concrete, metal, and any bright colors. The classic combination is black or dark gray.
Bathroom
Pure white is a natural choice for a bathroom. It is in this room that associations with cleanliness and that very feeling of sterility, for which many scold white interiors, come in handy. Therefore, most often for the bathroom choose light plumbing. You can complement it with white furniture: a cabinet for a sink, a shelving unit, or a built-in wardrobe.
This solution suits the bathroom not only in a philosophical sense. A small bathroom, due to the lack of natural light, seems even more cramped and darker. The abundance of light details, and glossy and mirror surface levels out this effect.
And so that the interior is not too “flat” and boring, it can be diluted with bright color accents – for example, in decor or wall decoration. You can make all the walls colored or just one, which will become the center of the composition and will attract attention, standing out against the background of other neutral elements.
