Mirrors, especially large ones, change the visual perception of space, its proportions, and illumination. And the main task is to make these properties work for you and your interior. We’ll tell you how to deal with it.
1. In the bedroom – not opposite the bed
In most cases, designers are far from superstitious, but we have to admit: sleeping reflected in the mirror is not very pleasant psychologically. That’s why it’s so important to find the right place for the mirror in the bedroom: for example, in the dressing area or near the chest of drawers.
If you still want to make the bedroom more airy using an extensive mirror surface, place the mirror on the wall to which the bed adjoins the headboard. This technique works best if light sources are reflected in mirrors.
2. In the living room – plan a reflection
If your goal is to increase the amount of light and add volume to the room, it is better to use a mirror cloth, placing it horizontally. A wide horizontal mirror, consisting of several parts, gives approximately the same effect as a solid one of comparable size.
And also relies on the rule of proportion: in a small living room, use one mirror in a beautiful frame, but position it so that it reflects most of the room.
3. In the nursery – at a safe height
For a child who is actively exploring the world, a mirror is the most important source of information about himself, so a mirror is also necessary in a child’s room. The recommendation about the reflection in the mirror of the bed is doubly applicable to children: the baby may be seriously frightened of his own reflection when he wakes up at night.
Also, you should not place a mirror in a small child’s room in a place accessible to him, especially if the baby is already quite active – it is unsafe. The distance from the floor to the top edge of the mirror should be at least 170 cm, and to the bottom – at least 50 cm. This way it’s easy to bring a child to it, but it’s difficult for the baby to get to a potentially unsafe object.
4. There is a mirror wall in the kitchen
Here is a visual demonstration of how mirrors work in the interior of a small kitchen to expand the space. Solid mirror panels seem to be created specifically for small kitchens: if the room is a typical 6 squares, a mirror wall will not only allow you to slightly expand the room but completely get rid of the feeling of a closed space.
5. In the bathroom – on the door
This is a good solution for those who wanted to get a full-length “glass piece”, but did not find a place for it. The mirror on the door does not take up any space at all, and you can install it yourself, simply by placing it on special glue.
6. In the hallway – dim the reflection
In pursuit of visual expansion of space, it is important to stop in time. An excess of mirror surface can make the room feel uncomfortable. This is especially true for cramped hallways or corridors – using a large mirror there, you risk achieving exactly the opposite effect. The solution here may be quite unusual: dim the reflection. For example, use antique or colored glass to decorate the wall.
