Given: guest bathroom
In the design project of an apartment with an area of 70 square meters according to the BTI plan, there is a bathroom with an area of 5 square meters and a small one. Using his example, let’s look at how you can plan a small bathroom and maximize its functionality.
First, let’s decide what functions the bathroom will perform. Is this a shower and toilet? Or toilet and sink? Room for laundry and dog bathing? Or, as in our case, a shower room, a toilet, a full sink for washing, a washing area, and a storage area for linen and household chemicals. And all this on five square meters with ten corners.
1. Assess your capabilities
Analyze the technical features of the bathroom. Where is the sewer riser located, where are the hot and cold water outlets? The location of the plumbing will depend on this. My advice: place the toilet and shower on the walls closest to the riser, as they require a connection to the sewer.
If there is not enough space for all the built-in functions, you can expand it. Enlarging the bathroom is allowed only at the expense of non-residential premises. I did just that: I extended the room by 750 millimeters using the hallway to accommodate a washing machine and dryer and additional storage space – a closet.
2. Take care of your knees
If it is not possible to arrange furniture and plumbing in a special program, draw out your plan on the floor and outline the boundaries of future items. This will help you understand whether you can move, turn, or bend without hitting corners.
Which toilet is suitable for small bathrooms – wall-hung with hidden installation or floor-mounted with a cistern? If there is free space in the plumbing box, it can be used to install the installation and gain 15 centimeters. If there is no space, modifying the toilet does not matter.
Important: do not ignore the ergonomic rules that determine the amount of free space around the toilet. Your knees should not rest against anything – leave at least 30 centimeters for them. Your elbows will remain without bruises if there are at least 20 centimeters from the side borders of the toilet to the walls or other objects.
3. Think about storage
If there is a guest bathroom and a sink is only needed for washing hands, it can be quite small. There are mini-bowls with a depth of 25 centimeters and a width of 45, and there are successful options for corner models. But if the bathroom is the main and only one, the minimum width of the sink is 60 centimeters.
If you want to store something under it, think about the storage location. Drawers, laundry baskets, open and closed shelves – everything is suitable. Our project uses a classic design ceramic sink, 60 centimeters wide. Underneath is a cabinet with an open shelf and one drawer for small items.
4. And washing will be a joy
The customer dreamed of a convenient combined technique for washing and drying clothes. As a rule, it is quite large. Many models of washing machines have a much shallower depth – only 35 centimeters.
A separate niche was allocated for equipment, and a hinged cabinet with shelves was built above it. Opposite we designed a cabinet for towels and household chemicals. The lower high drawer serves as a laundry basket. Thus, storage problems are also solved.
5. Tile size matters
The shower turned out to be in the shape of a trapezoid, 120 centimeters long and 87 centimeters wide. The shower room has a “bench” – a ledge on which you can rest or rest your feet to clean your heels.
The bottom and side of the shower stall are lined with small-format tiles. This is important since it is the small-sized tiles that, when laid, allow the craftsman to make a good slope of the floor level towards the water drain.
6. Choosing a shower tray
When choosing a bottom for your shower area, you have two options. The first is to buy a tray made of acrylic or artificial stone in ready-made standard sizes and adjust the dimensions of the shower to it. The second is to order an artificial stone tray to match the size of your bathroom. The second option is much more expensive.
You can close the shower from splashes of water either with a curtain or glass doors. Glass construction is certainly better, more hygienic, more aesthetically pleasing – but more expensive. In this project, the shower room is designed with ready-made glass railings.
7. Everything important should be at hand
The appearance of communication is usually unattractive, and many people want to hide it. Take your time, and think about what is more important – aesthetics or convenience. We take meter readings once a month. We need to turn off all taps every time we leave the house for more than three days. And sometimes you need to react to a water leak instantly.
If something happens when the child is left at home alone, it is necessary that he can open the inspection hatch and close the necessary valve without much effort.
