How to choose bed linen from satin and how to care for it

Satin bed linen has absorbed the best qualities: soft, silky, and natural (it is the best time to abandon synthetic fabrics). But it is important to understand: satin is just a fabric of a certain type of weaving. Bed linen made of satin will appeal to lovers of smooth materials, but its properties may differ slightly depending on what raw materials are used in its basis: it can be both cotton or more expensive silk, and budget blended fabrics.

Therefore, the first thing you need to pay attention to when choosing bed linen is the material, and not the type of weaving (for the most part, this is just a visual component). If you go into details, the satin pattern is built on the interweaving of one front and four back threads, due to this it looks “more complicated” and more interesting. Such a dense weave makes satin heavier than, for example, percale, so percale is well suited for summer nights, but satin bedding will be comfortable all year round.

When it comes to materials, the most popular raw material for satin bed linen is cotton. It is natural, so it does not cause allergies and provides a comfortable sleep (the body will not overheat or freeze).

Another important indicator is the density of the fabric, TC (Thread Count), which is calculated based on the number of threads per inch: the more threads, the denser the fabric. It is the TC that determines the durability and smoothness of bedding. For the house, satin with an indicator of 200-300 TC is excellent, while in hotels, due to frequent washings, satin with indicators of 400-500 TC and above is more common (recall: the higher the density, the more resistant to wear).

In today’s world, especially during the pandemic, we have to buy online more often. In the case of the choice of bed linen, the situation is complicated by the fact that we cannot touch it and see it live. Then you have to focus only on the picture on the site and the description. And this may be enough: a conscientious seller indicates the composition of the fabric, its density, and how to care for it. So the most important thing that you initially need to decide on is the manufacturer. If the site for some reason does not inspire confidence, then, of course, it is better to abandon such an online purchase and first make sure of the quality of the fabrics in the offline store. But even there the sensations can deceive: “Some manufacturers specially treat the fabric with silicone, which after the second or third washing is washed off along with “smoothness” and “silkiness”.

When it comes time to choose new bedding, premium options should be seen as a long-term investment. Good quality bedding can last a lifetime while retaining its appearance and properties, while budget bedding options will last only a few years and lose in comfort, softness, and color.”

It is worth taking care of the fabric (and yourself as well) from the very moment of buying bedding: new sheets should be washed at least twice before sleeping on them since often the packaging can lead to irritating substances getting on them. After the initial washing, bed linen should be washed at least once a week. In addition to dust, bed linen accumulates a fair share of sweat and dead skin cells. Clean bed linen improves both personal hygiene and sleep hygiene.

“The main advice for caring for bedding is to follow the washing instructions carefully. This will help to extend the service life of the products,” says Elena. Julia agrees with her: “It is important to read what the manufacturer writes on the label: he always indicates the optimal temperature of washing, ironing, whether drum drying is permissible … Even how to dry laundry – hang horizontally or vertically.”

It is usually recommended to wash satin bed linen at a low temperature, not dry it in direct sunlight, iron the inside out, avoid aggressive detergents.
