The Chia-Chair concept is primarily focused on nature, and only then on people. The main difference between the item and ordinary chairs and armchairs is its upholstery: instead of classic soft pillows, the creators used a knitted tubular structure that serves as a surface for planting chia seeds. Students at the HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg view furniture as “an entity in its own right that demands respect from the user.” The starting point for the creation of the object was the negative impact on the planet that we – humans – have by putting our own needs above all else. The chair frame is made of ash, and the wool cushion is tied in several knots to create a sculptural effect. Although the authors intended the design to be a statement rather than functional furniture, they believe that greenery will become a more common feature in our homes and workspaces in the future.
