By the beginning of 2024, a new pipe organ was installed at the Musiikkitalo Center in Helsinki – the largest in Finland and Scandinavia. The main difference of the instrument is its 124 registers on a series of shiny pipes of organic shapes reminiscent of tree branches. The Austrian company Rieger Orgelbau was responsible for the production of the organ, which chose a local wood-based biocomposite due to its environmental friendliness, efficiency, and functionality from an acoustic point of view. The sculptural composition of pipes on the body of the organ creates an impressive visual accent. Such a complex design solution required a flexible and cost-effective manufacturing method: the team used large-scale 3D printing technology, which was ideal for the thin cellulose fibers of the material.
