Architects have developed a concept for inflatable capsules that could be partially made from materials found on the Moon and 3D printed in situ. The ambitious project was created by the studio team for the program of the European Center for Space Astronomy: as the authors note, the capsules installed together can accommodate up to 144 people. The Lunar Habitat Master Plan concept includes not only residential space but also sports arenas, restaurants, and large greenhouses. According to the Hassell team, their concept is an attempt to imagine and begin to plan how larger communities could not just survive off Earth, but successfully explore space for permanent existence. The team sought to make the modular capsules as light and compact as possible and proposed to make them with the addition of lunar soil, which will protect people from lethal levels of radiation.
