Fernando Laposse made objects using avocados

As part of the exhibition project Conflict Avocados, on view at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne  until April 7 , the designer draws attention to the social and environmental consequences of global avocado consumption in Mexico. Thus, the 40-meter handmade tapestry is painted using pigment based on avocado seeds and calendula flowers and illustrates the history of the country’s indigenous community, which fought against deforestation for plantations. According to the author, the chosen material awakens the viewer’s curiosity, making him more receptive to the narrative. The large-scale textile work is complemented by a chest of drawers: the piece is made using the marquetry technique using waste avocado peels collected by the designer near his studio in Mexico City. Also for the exhibition, Laposse made a couch upholstered using the patchwork technique.
