A new boutique hotel has opened in the Majorelle Garden in Marrakech, a few steps from the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. Architectural firm Bergendy Cooke designed Maison Brummell Majorelle, drawing on the visual codes of local Moroccan culture and the site’s rich history, but interpreting them in a modern way.
Lush vegetation, pools, and ponds conjure up fabulous oases in the hot desert. “Starting with a sculptural volume, we created openings and voids of various sizes in it where necessary. This provides a variety of spatial sensations,” explains the architect. Working with scale, light, and shadow has become a staple, and the surrounding gardens use a similar language.
The play with green plants, and the variety of planting sizes and shapes is especially expressive in the indoor gardens for guests, where the dynamic design of the landscape contrasts with the sculptural form of the building.
The hotel has eight luxurious rooms, decorated in a restrained palette of earthy tones and complemented by elegant furniture and works of art: works by Spanish photographer Maite Karames and Swedish artist Per Henrik Adolfsson. The façade is finished with textured terracotta stucco, handmade tiles, and terrazzo in the public areas. Brass inserts mark the transitions between spaces, from the street to the hotel and from public to private spaces.
