South Korean architect and founder of the Mass Studies bureau Minsuk Cho was chosen as the author of the annual summer pavilion in Kensington Gardens in London. The Archipelagic Void project will be his first structure in the UK and will consist of five structures that will be placed in a star shape around a central space. Each of them will have its own function, from a library to a tea house. The architect’s concept references the cultural heritage of his home country, namely the typical small courtyards traditionally located in the center of historic Korean houses. Additionally, during the development of the project, Cho delved into the context of the site and examined the previous 22 pavilions built there. As a result, he decided to shift the focus to the peripheral elements of the site and treat the center as a void: the architect notes that this approach opens up new possibilities for storytelling.
The London Serpentine Gallery pavilion will open in June 2024.
