Canine and Feline is a pet hotel in Parade, Portugal. It was built on the territory of the winery by the local studio Raulino Silva Architect. The project was nominated for the 2020 Dezeen Awards in the Hospitality Building of the Year category.
Owners traveling for work or vacation can bring their pets to the Canine and Feline Hotel. All amenities are provided for the guests, including a grooming salon, a swimming pool, playgrounds, and training grounds. Next to the grooming rooms, there is a veterinarian’s office. The total area of the hotel: 800 sq. meters.
To prevent conflicts between dogs and cats, the architect came up with a layout that would separate the animals. The complex includes three blocks connected by external corridors. In one of the blocks, the smallest, there is a cat shelter with twelve separate rooms. They look out onto the playground, lit by a large skylight.
In the second block, architect Raulino Silva designed hotel rooms for dogs (41 in total). Lined up in two rows, they are located along the corridor that leads to the indoor playground. A garden stretches in the middle, its purpose is to block the dogs located on opposite sides of the corridor from each other’s eyes. All rooms have large windows overlooking nature.
To take advantage of the elevated terrain, the second block was made two-storey, with a laundry room and staff area with showers and changing rooms on the lower level, accessed via a spiral staircase. Finally, the third block, one-storey, contains a reception room, support services, and storage facilities.
Dogs are allowed to play outside and visit the training ground. This area is protected by a net stretched over granite pillars, which previously served as a support for the vine.
The architect Raulino Silva restored the original granite walls enclosing the site and used local granite for paving.
All three blocks of the hotel are clad in light gray panels with Composite Thermal Insulation System (ETICS) on the outside. The roof is made of bitumen, covered with a heat-insulating layer, and fixed with pebbles. The floors are made of a durable and easy-to-clean self-leveling epoxy resin: applied to a concrete base, which creates a seamless finish. Microcement was placed on the floors in the bathrooms and in the dog area to create a non-slip yet easy-to-clean surface. Doors and cabinets are made of MDF boards covered with white lacquer.
