British architects Foster + Partners have developed a master plan for an urban center in one of the surrounding areas of Hangzhou. It will be located around a central axis stretching 2.5 kilometers from north to south. Traversing various bodies of water, the axis forms five distinct zones, each celebrating the region’s connections to rivers, lakes, and canals. The city center is expected to feature high-rise buildings, a series of pavilions, a number of cultural facilities – galleries, an exhibition hall, and a public library – and a stadium. According to the studio’s architects, they sought to integrate elements of nature into the project to make it part of people’s daily lives. The team adds that the master plan is low-carbon and builds on sustainable strategies.
