Bellavista: reconstruction of a villa designed by Gio Ponti

The villa on Lake Como, designed by Italy’s greatest modernist architect, has reopened its doors to guests

Villa Bellavista on Lake Como was designed by Gio Ponti with the participation of Cesare Casati and Enzo Hibsch in the 1960s. Initially, it was intended for the summer holidays of the architect’s friends – members of the Fossati family. Today, anyone can book accommodation and spend a vacation in this residence.

The villa is located in the middle of a forest in a private area of one hectare. Guests have access to a view pool, sauna, jacuzzi, and bocce ball court.

It is no coincidence that the villa received its name: the house has an area of about 500 sq. meters located in the suburbs of Bellagio on a mountainside with stunning views of the surrounding area. This project is inspired by the image of an ocean liner: balconies on different tiers resemble open decks, and chimneys resemble ship chimneys. Ponti envisioned that guests would first enter the upper floors and then descend down a spiral staircase.

The main location of the villa is a spacious living room with a view with an arched wall, into which 11 windows are integrated. The eye-catching feature here is the centrally located lounge area with an original fireplace. Three bedrooms (there are six in total), furnished with mid-century furniture, also offer views of the lake.

In one of the rooms, you can see an iconic piece designed by Gio Ponti, first presented at the Milan Triennale in 1951 – a bed with a wooden headboard in the form of a dashboard, which is complemented by shelves and buttons for controlling the lights and radio. The villa also retains other original interior elements: for example, the bathroom is tiled with recognizable ceramic tiles designed by Ponti.
