Architects MVRDV will transform a former cement plant in Shanghai into a cultural quarter

Gate M West Bund Dream Center, designed by the Dutch bureau, will preserve the previous industrial structures, which will be combined with new architectural volumes: together they will transform the site into a lively quarter with an emphasis on culture and recreation. One of the key tasks of the architects will be to facilitate the flow of visitors. For example, throughout the entire cluster there will be a network of bright orange paths, ramps, steps and bridges connecting different buildings. In addition to former industrial buildings, the team will have to work with unfinished buildings left on the site after a recent renovation attempt. The architects plan to involve them in the project by placing hotels, restaurants and shopping centers inside. A nod to the quarter’s industrial past is reflected in simple and laconic architectural solutions, such as numerous glass facades.
