The international airport in the Indian city of Bangalore has a new terminal, the creation of which was carried out by the architects of the SOM studio together with the bureau Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla (AJSK) and Grant Associates. A “terminal in a garden,” as the project team describes the facility, offers passengers a calming environment as an alternative to the typical bustle of airports, as well as a rich sensory experience inspired by nature. The façade and interior of the building are decorated with bamboo structures, which the architects complemented with numerous hanging plants and greenery. The terminal interiors appear even more spacious and bright due to natural light coming through the openings in the ceiling. Bamboo and natural elements are combined in the project with other natural materials such as local granite and rattan.
