We tell you the rules for washing, drying, and ironing for bamboo, cotton, linen, woolen fabrics, and modal products.
1. Bamboo fabrics
Bamboo is one of the most durable plant species. It is used in the production of various household items: from flooring to textiles. Bamboo fabric is soft and has natural antibacterial properties, but can also stretch easily. Therefore, other fibers are often mixed into bamboo during the production process.
How to wash
Use regular washing powder. If you wash bamboo fabric clothes in the washing machine, choose a delicate cycle, this will help maintain the shape of the item. For bamboo bedding, the standard mode is suitable. It is better not to use hot water (more than 30 degrees) – only warm and cold.
How to remove stains
Despite the natural nature of the material, chemical stain removers (for example, Tide or Persil) are safe for bamboo fabrics. You can apply a small amount to the stain and leave for 15 minutes before washing.
Bleach should be avoided, especially if it contains chlorine. If the fabric needs bleaching, choose oxygen-based products. To disinfect fabric (for example, pillows or blankets made of bamboo), it is best to use natural products (pine essential oil is suitable).
How to dry
Bamboo clothing and bedding should not be automatically dried; it is better to hang the fabrics on a clothesline or leave them on a drying rack. We recommend drying clothes horizontally to avoid stretching.
How to iron
Set the iron to a low temperature and turn off the steam mode. High temperatures can damage bamboo fibers.
2. Cotton fabrics
Perhaps cotton is one of the most popular materials all over the world. It is used to make bed linen, blankets, decorative pillow covers, and clothing. Cotton does not cause allergies, is resistant to insects, and is easy to care for.
How to wash
Choose any powder; cotton fabrics are not fussy. To soften the fibers, you can use fabric softeners and fabric softeners.
It is recommended to wash cotton clothes in warm or cold water to prevent shrinkage. Cold washing is also recommended for colored and dark fabrics. However, it is better to wash bed linen, bath, and kitchen towels in hot water to prevent the development of bacteria.
Cotton can be washed in a washing machine on almost any cycle. The only clarification is that if the items have lace or other decorative details, it is better to choose a delicate wash.
How to remove stains
Use an oxygen stain remover. If the fabric is dark in color, it is better to test the reaction of the product on the reverse side to make sure that the color will not be affected.
How to dry
Cotton fabrics are often not recommended to be dried in a dryer at high temperatures or in the sun. Due to automatic drying, they can shrink and wrinkle, and in the sun they can fade.
How to iron
Use a medium ironing setting and always turn the item inside out. Temperatures that are too high can burn the cotton fibers. It is also permissible to use a steamer for cotton items.
3. Linen materials
Linen is perhaps the second most recognizable and popular natural fiber. Unlike cotton, linen fabrics are more prone to abrasion and require more delicate care.
How to wash
Linen clothing, pillowcases, or decorative pillow covers must first be turned inside out. This will help prevent surface fibers from deteriorating during washing. It is better to wash clothes by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle and rinse only in cold water. Bed linen and tablecloths do not require such gentle handling; as a rule, the labels say that they can be washed at 40 (and sometimes 60) degrees.
How to remove stains
If linen is dyed, the stain remover may change the color of the material, so it is always best to test the effect on the inseam or hem of the item. Apply the product to the seam, then wipe with a cotton pad. If color remains on the disc, do not use this product. It is also better to avoid chlorine bleach and use other formulations.
How to dry
It is best to dry flax in the fresh air, but you can also use an automatic dryer at medium temperature. Do not dry items in the dryer completely, otherwise severe creases will appear. Remove the slightly damp cloth and dry it on the crossbar.
How to iron
Some people prefer not to iron linen items, tablecloths, and especially bed linen at all. We can agree with this – slightly wrinkled fabric still looks stylish. But if you still decide to pick up an iron, start ironing on a slightly damp cloth and do not set the maximum temperature.
4. Modal
Modal is a popular material used for the production of bed linen and home textiles, although it has only recently appeared on the market. In fact, it is a mixture of viscose with beech wood fibers. The material cannot be called completely natural; modal is classified as a fabric based on a natural basis.
How to wash
It is better to place small items in a special mesh bag for washing in the washing machine. Choose delicate mode and cold water.
How to remove stains
To remove stains, you can use diluted chlorine bleach, but only on white fabrics. In other cases, it is recommended to mix powdered oxygen bleach and water, following the instructions on the package.
How to dry
Modal needs to be dried at low temperatures, so don’t go overboard with automatic drying. It is better to leave the fabric slightly damp to prevent severe creases.
How to iron
As a rule, such things do not need ironing, but you can use a steamer if creases do appear, or set the iron to medium mode.
5. Wool and cashmere fabrics
Surely each of you has clothes or home textiles made of wool in your home. Cashmere is a premium fabric, but you can also find blankets and bedspreads made from it for your home. Wool and cashmere require delicate care.
How to wash
If we talk about clothes (coats, jackets), then it is always better to dry clean such items. Home accessories, as well as sweaters, scarves, and hats, can be washed by hand or in a delicate machine wash.
Choose a mild detergent and set the wash cycle to cool water. Also, do not wring wool and cashmere fabrics too hard; they are easy to stretch.
How to remove stains
Before using stain remover, test it on the inside of the material. Chlorine bleach is strictly not recommended for use, even in diluted form.
How to dry
Do not use machine drying, otherwise, the materials will wrinkle and it will be almost impossible to restore them. It is better to dry things horizontally, for example on a dryer, and place a towel under them.
How to iron
It is allowed to use a steamer on low settings or an iron, but in this case, limit yourself to a low temperature.
