Above the door, under the bed, or in an awkward corner – we tell you how to use every centimeter in a small room.
1. Above the door
The space above the door is never thought about when planning storage. However, a large, long shelf made of dark wood will become a bright accent in a bright living room and will fit a couple of dozen books.
And the shelves above the kitchen door and along its perimeter seem very small only at first glance. You can store cutting boards, part of the tableware, and cookbooks on them – not so little for a small kitchen.
If your bathroom door is located next to a wall, try hanging a corner shelf above it to accommodate more items, such as extra soap or scented candles.
2. Above the bed
If you have a small bedroom and the head of the bed takes up almost the entire wall, plan shelves above the bed and along the wall. This solution looks much more interesting than an empty wall and more original than the usual combination of a bed and two small bedside tables.
You can build spotlights into the base of the shelves and solve the issue of additional lighting if you like to read before bed. In terms of spaciousness, this solution also wins – there will be somewhere to store books, some bed linen, and blankets.
3. On wall panels
Regular shelves can take up too much space in a small room and not be able to store some small items. If this is your case, hang a wall panel on the wall with lots of holes that you can attach hooks or small stands to. This way you can store various accessories in the bathroom, jewelry, shoes, and clothes in the bedroom, toys and creative tools in the nursery. At any time you can change everything or move the panel to another room, no extra holes in the walls and no problems with finding shelves.
4. In colored boxes
In the living room, you can use several bright multi-colored metal boxes instead of the usual wall decoration with collages of photographs and posters. Before attaching the boxes to the wall, cut out rectangles of the same size from colored cardboard and stick them to the wall with tape. The entire composition should not be too strict and even, otherwise the wall will resemble safe deposit boxes.
5. Behind the curtain
The standard depth of a wardrobe is forty to fifty centimeters. Not every small room will be able to fit a closet of such dimensions, and custom-made furniture is more expensive. Sometimes a finished cabinet even loses in spaciousness, since part of the space is spent on doors and the distance to them. A cornice on the ceiling and a curtain, behind which you will hide all the same shelves and crossbars for hangers, will help you save the necessary centimeters for storage and save on buying a closet.
6. On the first tier
Before trying to fit everything into a tiny bedroom at once – a bed, a workspace, and a closet, try resorting to two-level systems. In this case, the bed is usually located at the top, and crossbars for clothes and shelves are installed under it. You can also fit a small table there, and then there will even be free space in the room. This solution looks very cozy and neat, especially suitable for a nursery or a student’s room.
7. In the corners
Don’t leave corners empty in small apartments. Perhaps a closet or shelves, open hangers, or a wicker basket will fit in there successfully.
8. Under the bed
Choose a bed with drawers or organize a mini-podium for it. You can store not only bed linen in them, but also shoes, bags – everything that cannot be fit and organized in the closet.
