Girona remains undeservedly forgotten on the list of tourist destinations in Catalonia. In addition to gastronomy, culture, and amazing nature, the city boasts an impressive architectural heritage. The rich culture of the past served as inspiration for the Spanish architecture studio El Equipo Creativo, which transformed an abandoned 18th-century city palace into a boutique hotel, Palau Fugit.
The hotel is located in the heart of Girona’s old town. Ancient stone facades, arches, and vaults became the backdrop for a new bright palette of colors, referencing local culture, in particular the annual flower festival. The El Equipo Creativo project combines respect for heritage with the use of current trends, and the interiors of the spaces complement the work of contemporary artists and craftsmen.
Palau Fugit offers city guests to stay in two buildings: the historical or modern part, connected to the first terrace with a swimming pool. A sculpture by local artist Frederic Amat appeared in the center of the courtyard.
This historical part houses the reception, restaurant, cocktail bar, and spa area. The interiors here are a modern interpretation of the late 19th-century style. The architects sought to recreate the atmosphere of the historical residence of a noble Catalan family of that era.
The rooms are decorated in a soft palette of blues, grays, and pinks, which are enlivened by stucco decoration and figured window shutters. The rooms in the modern part are decorated in a Mediterranean style in terracotta shades and complemented by locally produced ceramics. The main theme of the interior continues in the restaurant of the Casa Heras hotel. Works by contemporary artists also appeared here, including wall paintings carried out for the project by artist Joana Santamans. At the same time, the Gipsy bar seems more intimate and chamber due to the chosen color scheme.
