Trends 2023/2024: optimistic public art by Lara Bohinc

Lara Bohinc’s project, which she called Utopia, is about positive emotions, a mixture of organics and urbanism, and the almost “biological” existence of objects. “I wanted this installation to talk about life, growth, organisms, and something really positive, animated, and how nature can spread throughout the city,” says the designer.

This is the artist’s first public installation in the United States. She turns to this genre extremely rarely – her previous work for public spaces was called “Friendship Bench” and was created in London in 2014. Bohinc has now created 36 large-scale works. Their spherical shapes and circular arrangement are designed to promote interaction between people of all ages.

“Their main functions are to be seats. But since the objects are convex and round, I think children will crawl on them and dogs will go inside them,” Bohintz says of the interactive forms placed in different areas of Miami during Design Miami 2023. They were installed in front of boutiques throughout the Palm -Court, and one group sat in front of Buckminster Fuller’s famous Fly’s Eye Dome.

Lara focused her work on the natural form of this masterpiece in order to maintain a dialogue with the master’s work. “Fuller’s project was a direct source of inspiration for my performance – to me, the dome looks like a cell multiplying and surpassing the square of the pool. And I thought: what if these cells continue to multiply?”

The products are ergonomic and take the form of chairs, benches, and tables of convex shapes, made of cork and painted in pastel colors. Among the projects is an egg-shaped object with cavities inside: it should become a playground for children.
