Garden on the windowsill: how to grow spices in your own mini-greenhouse?

The summer season is in the middle, and with it, fresh vegetables and herbs from the garden almost ended. But do not rush to buy tasteless fruits in the store, you may well grow them on the windowsill of your apartment.

1. How to grow green onions?

The easiest way is to plant ordinary onions, which are in the house of every person. Before planting, soak them in hot water, preferably for several hours, or even overnight. After – remove the husk and cut off the top, but not much.

Keep the distance between the onions about 1-2 cm, and do not bury them deep in the soil. Ready. Now take them to a warm place, and when start to appear, return to the windowsill. You can’t cut them right away, otherwise, growth will stop. It is better when the height of the onions is 15-20 cm, and do not cut at the root.

How to water? A day later with warm water.
When is the first harvest expected? 3 weeks.

2. Salad

Leaf lettuce is capricious. It needs a lot of light, on cloudy days it needs additional light, and the temperature should also not be very high, otherwise the salad will dry out. In a word, growing large bunches of juicy lettuce, which are sold on the market, is not so simple.

How to water? Every evening, and also arrange a “shower” from a spray bottle.
When is the first harvest expected? After 5-7 days, the first shoots will appear.

3. Parsley

This spice is grown in two ways: from seeds or root crops. The second is more simple. Where to look for parsley roots? You can ask at grocery stores. Only they must have a root, otherwise, there will be no seedlings. Plant the root crops in a box, sprinkle the tops with earth, and pour plenty of water.

How to water? Often, but in moderation.
When is the first harvest expected? About 3 weeks.

4. Dill

Dill is considered an annual plant, so it grows only from seeds. But you can plant it at any time of the year. Just keep in mind that with a lack of sun from October to March, additional illumination is required – stock up on fluorescent lamps. The preparation is not difficult: soak the seeds for 2 days, but do not forget to change the water every 12 hours, prepare the soil (you can take a mixture of garden soil and potting soil) with expanded clay, and then sow the seeds in shallow holes.

How to water? Moderately, waiting for dry soil.
When is the harvest expected? 30-40 days.

5. Spinach

Spinach is a super healthy plant and can be grown on a windowsill too. Need high containers, 15-20 cm, and spinach seeds. In winter, with a lack of light, it is recommended to illuminate the mini-beds with lamps and water from a spray bottle, since spinach needs moisture. For germination speed, you can cover the container with a film.

How to water? Moderately and often, but avoid excessive moisture.
When is the harvest expected? 40 days.

6. Basil

Fragrant spices are loved by many, how to grow them on the windowsill? Basil is grown in large containers, from 1.5 liters. First, you need to prepare the soil – pour it with mineral fertilizers, 2 times with an interval of 5 days. And then sow the seeds in the recesses of 1-1.5 cm.

How to water? Every 2 days until it starts to grow. Further – daily.
When is the harvest expected? 50-55 days.

7. Mint

Mint has branched roots and grows deep, so you need the right shape. And the rest – mint is unpretentious, it is enough to monitor the amount of light and not water it too often. Mature plants often grow large and leafy, so brewing fresh mint into tea or using it in desserts or cooking is more than enough.

How to water? Whenever the soil is dry.
When is the harvest expected? On average after 60 days.
