Best project in Australia. This year’s top award, the Premier Award for Interior Design at the Australian Interior Design Awards (AIDA), was awarded to Clare Cousins Architects’ Stable and Cart House.
This year’s awards ceremony marked a return to its traditional ritual, with Australia’s best and most respected designers attending a gala dinner at the Sydney Grand Hyatt. The award’s industry-leading program comes through a partnership between the Design Institute of Australia and Artichoke Magazine. Calling Clare Cousins Architects’ project “sublime in every way,” the jury applauded the practice for its innate understanding of design, creating a home that takes into account “how people live in space.” According to the jury, “Stable and Cart House is an absolutely outstanding project in all categories. What resonates most is the authenticity of the design and that it’s designed to live, not just look at it.”
This year’s Residential Decoration Award was presented to Flack Studio for Troye Sivan House. The jury notes that the studio captured “a strong sense of the client’s character through the beautiful selection of art objects, furniture, lighting and objects in a way that does not seem strained or far-fetched.”
Studio Edwards’ Finesse Shoe Store won this year’s Retail Design Award as well as the Sustainability Advancement Award for creating an immersive retail experience based on sustainability principles. The judges noted that “this is a simple, beautifully implemented project, which is also able to convey a sense of “urbanism” associated with the nature of the sale of sneakers.”
Calling this year’s hotel design projects “incredibly impressive and difficult to evaluate,” the judges declared Studio Gram’s Arkhé worthy of the Best of State Award for Commercial Design (SA). The jury stated that “the purely experiential nature of moving around the interior makes the project bold and powerful.” This year’s Sustainability Award was given to two projects: 17 Union Street by BKK Architects and Clare Cousins Architects and FJMT Studio.
In the Emerging category and Melbourne designer Brahman Perera. The jury believes that his thoughtful and visionary design embodies the potential and promise of Australian design, that “it demonstrates solid design principles and individual style, flair, and restraint.”
