At the very beginning of 2023, the scandalous memoirs of Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, were released. Spare’s book contains many candid confessions about the confrontation with the royal family in 2019. in which William calls Meghan “difficult”, “rude” and “abrupt” and later fights with Harry, the events unfold against the serene backdrop of the palaces and cottages of the Windsors. In which houses did the dramatic events take place, where Harry spent his childhood, and where he now lives with his American wife and two children?
In a 416-page book written by J. R. Moehringer and published by Penguin Random House, Harry writes that before the fight, William wanted to talk about the “increasing disaster” of their relationship and wrestling with the press. But when William arrived at Nottingham Cottage (known as “Knott Cott”), where Harry then lived, he was already too nervous – and knocked his brother to the floor.
Harry’s resentment of being “spare” (as the title of the memoir “Spare” translates) is a unifying theme of his book. The chapters on his childhood, training, a career in the royal family and in the British army, his relationship with his parents and brother, life with and courting Meghan, marriage, and marriage with their own experience of parenthood are full of private details and descriptions of everyday life.

Kensington Palace – childhood home
Prince Harry has fond memories of growing up at Kensington Palace. Prince Charles and Princess Diana moved into apartments 8 and 9 at Kensington Palace in July 1981, Prince William was born in 1982, and Harry arrived two years later. Purchased by William III as a country home in 1689, the palace has been home to many members of the royal family, including Queen Victoria, and is the London base of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Princess Diana turned the apartment into a happy family home with the help of interior designer Dudley Poplak. She converted the entire top floor into a playroom and two bedrooms furnished by the luxury children’s design company Dragons.
Kensington Palace was the playground for the little prince, who loved to run around the garden throwing rocks and feeding the fish, according to the former royal estate manager in the Channel 5 documentary Kensington Palace: Behind Closed Doors. A favorite of his mother, Princess Diana, The Sunken Garden held a special place in Prince Harry’s heart, and he later chose it as the backdrop when he announced his engagement to Meghan in 2017. He joined his brother Prince William here in July 2021 to unveil a statue commemorating their mother’s legacy.
Highgrove House
Charles and Diana divided their time between Kensington Palace and their country estate, Highgrove House. Prince Charles bought the country house in Gloucestershire in 1980 – a year before he married Diana – and the couple used it for a country weekend getaway. Princes William and Harry also spent much of their childhood here, and family pictures show the couple riding ponies around the grounds. Surrounded by countryside and landscaped gardens, Highgrove was an exciting destination for young princes. Although the house is now owned by the new Prince of Wales, it is believed that the King will continue to use the house.
Soho House Club
Harry and Meghan revealed in the documentary that their first date was at the trendy private club Soho House at 76 Dean Street in central London. The converted Grade II listed townhouse has several cozy corners, including the Library Bar, with its patterned chairs and kilim rugs, where the couple could get to know each other away from prying eyes. Before Meghan deleted her social media accounts and shut down her lifestyle blog The Tig in preparation for becoming a member of the royal family, Meghan regularly documented her interior style.
Nottingham Cottage
Known as “Nott Cott”, Nottingham Cottage was a truly happy place for Prince Harry and Meghan. It was not only their first joint home but also a building designed by Christopher Wren. As you know, the prince here proposed to his future wife over fried chicken in November 2017. The cottage was originally the property of the late Queen and Princess Margaret but served as a bachelor pad for Prince Harry from 2013 until Meghan joined in 2017. It was here that the dramatic meeting with William, described in the memoirs, took place – this prompted Harry to resign from his royal duties.
Frogmore Cottage
Frogmore Cottage on Windsor Estate was given to the couple by the late Queen when they married in 2018 but was loaned to Prince Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie, her husband Jack Brooksbank, and their 15-month-old August Philip when Harry and Meghan stepped down from their royal duties. The Prince stayed at the hotel when he returned to the UK to attend his grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021 and when he and Meghan returned for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration in June 2022. However, the couple first introduced their newborn son Archie to the media here at Windsor Castle in May 2019.
Holidays on Vancouver Island
At the end of November 2019, the family spent six weeks in Canada for the Christmas holidays after their tour of South Africa. They enjoyed the beauty of Vancouver Island in a $14 million vacation home. The waterfront mansion in North Saanich, owned by a mysterious multimillionaire, is located in one of the most picturesque parts of the island. On the closed plot there is a summer house and several hectares of magnificent gardens. The Canadian mansion has its own waterfront, the perfect retreat from the hectic life of royalty. In January 2020, they announced that they were stepping down as senior members of the royal family to become financially independent and revealed their plans to spend time between the UK and North America.
Chateau of Riven Rock, California
Prince Harry and Meghan purchased their current home, Riven Rock Castle, for $14.7 million in July 2020. According to public documents, this house in Montecito (Santa Barbara County) was purchased by the couple with a mortgage. Its previous owner, Russian businessman Sergei Grishin, suffered losses of more than $10 million when he bought the house in 2009 for $25.3 million. Built-in 2003, the American estate has nine bedrooms and 16 bathrooms. Rustic master suite with wood-beamed ceilings, private bathroom and access to a balcony with ivy-covered pergola. Equipped with luxurious amenities, the home includes a library, gym, sauna, home theater, and elevator, as well as a playhouse and play area.
